2015 Shelby GT: Shelby American's maxi Mustang
Taking the Ford Mustang GT to an entirely different performance plane, the 2015 Shelby GT made its debut at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona last weekend. This latest and most potent aftermarket creation from Las Vegas-based Shelby American matches a 627-horsepower supercharged V8 - the most powerful base engine ever offered in any Shelby GT -- with a performance suspension, and custom styling elements. Available as a "post-title" package on an owner's 2015 Mustang GT Coupe or Convertible, the car is 50-state legal and can be ordered directly from Shelby American or through any participating Ford dealer.
"This 2015 Shelby GT incorporates all of the engineering lessons we've learned building high performance vehicles over the past 50 years," noted Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American at the unveiling. "With the international distribution of the current Ford Mustang, we worked closely with our partners to develop a car that can be offered in both North America and overseas. It's the first Shelby muscle car in our history designed from day one to be a truly global vehicle."
Borrowing a number of classic Shelby styling cues, the GT's exterior was designed in-house. It features lightweight carbon fiber aerodynamic elements - notably the fully vented hood, front splitter, rocker sills, decklid and spoiler as well as a 2-piece rear diffuser. The aggressive bodywork is set off with unique billet aluminum grilles and loads of Shelby badging. The cabin trim features a carbon fiber tri-gauge dash pod and Shelby-branded door sill plates and floor mats. In keeping with tradition, each car produced also will carry a numbered Shelby American CSM dash plaque and engine plate for documentation in the official Shelby American Worldwide Registry.
Chassis enhancements on the 2015 Shelby GT include a comprehensive handling pack (springs/shocks/sway bars) and heavy-duty half-shafts from the Ford Racing catalog and upgraded Wilwood front brakes. All versions get 3.73:1 rear gears and cars with a manual transmission also feature a Ford Racing short-throw shifter. Rounding out the mix are Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires - 275/35 fronts and 305/30s at the rear -- wrapped around 20-inch/staggered-width Shelby-spec Weld lightweight alloy wheels.
Pricing for the standard 2015 Shelby GT modification starts at $39,995, and orders are now being taken with deliveries to start in the second quarter. For those needing an extra measure of go-fast, Shelby American also offers a host of options - including a hotter 700-horsepower-plus engine upgrade.
