2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe: Elegant exhilaration
Following the reveal of the hot 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe in New York, Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off an even more-intense variation on the 2-door S-Class in the form of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe. Although the two share a good deal of basic engineering, the newest AMG Coupe adds more pure power and sophistication to the formula while bringing its own visual spark to the mix.
Exquisitely celebrating the V12 mystique
The heart of the S65 AMG Coupe is its hand-built AMG 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 that makes 621 horses and develops a heady 738 lb-ft of peak torque from 2,300 to 4,300 rpm. By comparison, the S63 AMG's twin-turbo 5.5-liter AMG V8 develops "just" 577 horses and 664 lb-ft of peak twist. While each is fitted with M-B's ECO start/stop and backed by a multi-mode/paddle-activated 7-speed AMG SpeedShift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission, the former sends all of its motive force to the rear wheels while the latter splits power between both axles.
Acceleration times for these ultra-coupes are virtually identical - 3.9 seconds for the S63 versus 4.0-ticks for the S65 AMG - and an electronic limiter caps top speed on each at 186 mph. However, the extra cylinder count endows the S65 with even smoother and more effortless response to throttle inputs throughout the entire rev range. Despite the relative parity in performance, Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, notes that V12 charisma has proven to be a paramount consideration for at least some well-heeled AMG buyers.
As one would expect, the new S65 Coupe boasts a full suspension makeover that brings its own AMG take on M-B's Magic Body Control system. Here, Active Body Control, Road Surface Scan and the unique curve-tilting function that allows the car to "lean into" corners, are teamed with variable ratio electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering and AMG high-performance brakes that can be upgraded to ceramic composite stoppers.
A brighter, bolder character
Visually, the new S65 AMG Coupe boasts all of the more aggressive, aero-enhancing AMG-designed exterior bits introduced on the S63 AMG, from its bolder front/rear fascia treatments to more deeply contoured side sills. But the V12 incarnation complements the added function with an extra helping of chrome accenting. The new S65 AMG Coupe also rides on its own bespoke forged-alloy 20-inch wheels wrapped in 245/40 front and 285/35 rear tires and polished to a bright finish.
Inside, the S65 AMG Coupe displays all of the premium character and features you'd expect of this flagship. Its AMG sport seats are trimmed in Diamond-tufted designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather and matched with a Nappa leather headliner. The AMG-spec multifunction steering wheel and TFT-screen instrument cluster team with a head-up display, Burmeister 3D premium audio and the latest COMAND navigation/telematics package that includes M-B's new center-mount touchpad input device.
Safety also is a prominent consideration and the S65 AMG Coupe's full suite of driver/passenger protection elements is further highlighted by the Driving Assistance package Plus (Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, Pre-Safe Brake, BAS Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Pre-Safe Plus), a 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist with Parktronic.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe is set to arrive in dealers here late this year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but it's likely to command at least $215,000 - sticker for the outgoing CL65 AMG Coupe it replaces in the lineup.
