Making its world debut in New York, the 2014 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design adds even more appeal to the automaker's best-selling U.S. model. As always, the R-Design configuration adds its own sense of style and performance to the mix. The most visible changes to the 2014 S60 T6 R-Design are seen up front where the revamped fascia treatment on this mid-size all-wheel-drive sedan incorporates a recast frameless Tech Matte Black grille that features a high-gloss black insert with a silk-metal diagonal "iron mark" and a more elegant R-Design emblem. The daytime running lights also have been redone to reinforce the car's low-slung character. A new diffuser that splits a pair of large, round R-Design tailpipes adds more interest to the rear while new 19-inch optional alloy wheels round out the mix.

Both the base and upline Platinum versions of the S60 T6 R-design get a 325-horsepower version of the 300-horse/3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 used in the basic T6 AWD models. For 2014, all 6-cylinder S60s will benefit from new Advanced Quick Shift software for the standard 6-speed automatic transmission. In the R-Design, that bit of electric optimization trims 0-60 mph times from 5.5 to 5.3 seconds compared to the 2013 car. The suspension - which is 0.6-inch lower than the standard Dynamic chassis - carries on with stiffer springs, bushings, roll-bars and custom dampers to improve control without hammering ride compliance, delivering what Volvo calls "a sporting yet luxurious feel." Like all S60s, the R-Design augments its basic Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system with torque-vectoring Corner Traction Control.
Inside, the new S60 T6 R-Design comes with black perforated leather upholstery and a black headliner. Its more deeply bolstered sport seats feature a blue embroidered R-Design logo while the tri-mode (Elegance/Eco/Performance) Adaptive Digital Display gets its own R-Design tweak with blue instrument dial lighting in the Elegance setting.
Doug Speck, senior vice president marketing, sales and customer service at Volvo Car Group, believes the new R-Design will account for about 10 percent of total S60 sales when the car arrives in dealers this summer and that more than half will be purchased by individuals who drive other brands of vehicles. Pricing for the 2014 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
