2014 Chevrolet Silverado Concepts show their saving graces
As a final flourish to a week that saw the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD, 2015 GMC Sierra HD and Ford F-Series HD pickups revealed at the State Fair of Texas, the wraps have come off two more trick trucks at the same venue. Both the Chevrolet Silverado Black Ops Concept and the Silverado Volunteer Firefighter Concept are one-offs based on the 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 and focus on different facets of the survival theme.
Spun from a Crew Cab 4x4 with a Z71 off-road suspension, the stealthy Silverado Black Ops Concept boasts all-terrain tires on unique 18-inch wheels, custom fender flares and lower body armor, a front-mounted LED-illuminated power winch, tubular assist steps, bespoke bed rails and a light bridge with LED fore/aft facing illumination. The lockable bed-mounted Truck Vault storage unit is filled with everything from a solar power pack and military first aid kit to a pair of gas masks and a folding shovel and is topped by a generator plus fuel and water cans as well as a crate stocked emergency provisions that include mass quantities of those perennial favorites Twinkies and Ramen noodles. Finished in a black and yellow motif, the cabin of the Black Ops Concept features Chevy's MyLink system with navigation and a host of USB and other accessory inputs.
Developed using input from the National Volunteer Fire Council, Chevy created the Silverado Volunteer Firefighter Concept as a rolling homage to those often unsung but critically important first responders. Also a 4x4 with Z71 upgrade, it's based on the 2014 Silverado's new Double Cab configuration but features a higher-profile exterior treatment keyed to its bright red and silver paint set off with custom graphics, a bounty of accessory chrome accents and 6-spoke 22-inch wheels. Other distinctive touches include a Chevrolet gull-wing tool box, billet aluminum brush guard and bed rails, a cantilever cab-over TracRac, auxiliary roof, perimeter LED lighting, an emergency siren and a PA system. Rounding out the mix are chrome-finish fire extinguishers plus an axe, shovel and halligan, all neatly secured in its liner-protected bed. The passenger compartment also boasts an extra helping of shiny bits that set off seats rimmed with 3M reflective bolstering material and Torch Red accent stitching.
The Chevrolet Silverado Black Ops Concept and the Silverado Volunteer Firefighter Concept will be heading to Las Vegas in November to take their next turn in the public limelight as part of the automaker's display at the SEMA Show.
