Adding a bit more muscle to the hottest version of its newly launched mid-size sedan, the 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design made arrived in New York fitted with an even-stronger version of the automaker's T6 engine to complement its carryover bodywork, suspension and interior upgrades. When the 2011 Volvo S60 R-Design was introduced at the Paris Auto Show last summer, its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six churned out 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, identical numbers to the fully redesigned S60 T6 that went on sale here last year. To more aggressively set it apart for the 2012 model year in the U.S market, Volvo recalibrated the engine control software to pump output on the R-Design to 325 ponies and 354 lb-ft of twist.

In making the announcement, Doug Speck, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, also advised that the same powerplant also would be used in the mid-size 2012 Volvo XC60 R-Design crossover SUV. While offering no projected acceleration times, Speck did advise: "The jump in performance will re-define these two R-Design models." Both are set to arrive at dealers in late summer, with the 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design sedan starting at $43,150 and the 2012 Volvo XC60 R-Design SUV opening at $44,025.
