Making its formal public debut in production form, the 2012 Opel Ampera turned up in Geneva looking virtually the same as it did at the Paris Auto Show last summer. This more dramatically styled European cousin of Chevrolet Volt shares all of its key Voltec E-REV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) hardware but offers it up in a decidedly higher profile package.

As part of the intro, Opel announced that Ampera pricing will start in Germany at €42,900 ($59,875), although various government incentives will help reduce that figure to just over €36,000 ($50,245). Interestingly enough, Chevrolet also used its Geneva appearance to announce that Volt pricing would commence at €41,950 ($58,550) in Germany.  Both vehicles will go on sale in various European markets later this year.
