2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC - 2011 NY Auto Show

Shown off site in conjunction with the New York show, the 2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC is a slightly more civilized U.S.-specific version of the euro-only GranTurismo MC Stradale Coupe. Although it dispenses with some of the more overt competition-oriented touches found in its continental cousin -- a mildly disguised, street-legal variant of Maserati's GT racer -- this range-topping, head-turning coupe still packs plenty of excitement. What goes? Where the two-seat Stradale gets competition-style fixed-back front shells our MC will have more deeply bolstered variations of the GranTurismo's standard front and rear perches. Weight- saving carbon-ceramic brakes also give way to extremely capable but conventional steel alternatives.

On the upside, our MC GranTurismo variant will come with the revamped body bits -- a new hood with heat-extraction vents plus side sills, rear wing and rear diffuser -- that combine to raise downforce by 25 percent up front and 50 percent in the rear. The MC's tauter suspension is lower than the base GranTurismo and custom 20-inch forged-alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli PZero Corsa tires ensure serious stick at speed. In addition to its more user-friendly seating configuration, the GranTurismo MC's ebony cabin motif features a mix of black Poltrona Frau leather and Alcantara and boasts a unique dash/gauge treatment.

Motivating the 2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC will be a Ferrari-supplied 4.7-liter DOHC V8 that makes 444 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, up from the 440/361 specs of the standard GranTurismo engine. Backed by a six-speed, paddle-shifted automatic that can rev-match on downshifts and uses uspecific MC programming logic, Maserati says the new GranTurismo MC will run 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds on its way to a top end of 185 mph.

Although pricing has yet to be announced for the 2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC, orders are now being taken and deliveries are set to start in late summer.
