What began as a stylish concept that first appeared at the 2010 SEMA Show is set to hit Toyota showrooms later this summer as a limited-production upgrade to the automaker's popular Prius Hybrid line. Although the 2011 Toyota Prius PLUS Performance Package entails no changes to the car's Hybrid Synergy Drive system this TRD-developed combination of enthusiast-focused visual and functional enhancements highlights a new facet of this best-selling green machine's character while fully maintaining all of its standard-issue fuel economy.
Available in Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Black and Winter Gray Metallic, the 2011 Toyota Prius PLUS Performance Package showcases an aero-optimized seven-piece body kit with bespoke front/rear bumper spoilers, side skirts and a unique rear diffuser that combine to actually trim the drag coefficient. On the handling front, the Prius PLUS gets a tuned suspension with stiffer springs that drop front/rear ride height by 1.1/1.3-inches, respectively, a stouter rear anti-roll bar and 17-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels that feature a liquid metal finish and a deeper offset. These track-expanding rims are wrapped in suitable wider and lower-profile 215/45 tires. Rounding out the mix are a set of PLUS logo floor mats and badging.
Toyota will make the Prius PLUS Performance Package available as an option on all 2011 Prius models with pricing set at $3,699 on Prius Two/Three/Four variants and $2,999 on the top-line Prius Five. Ordering is set to start in July. The automaker says this collection of goodies for the Prius is merely the first of what will be a full array of PLUS accessories it plans to being offering in the months ahead.
