As has become custom, among the first official events on the 2011 Detroit Auto Show schedule was the presentation of the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards. This year, 49 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada voted the 2011 Chevy Volt and 2011 Ford Explorer the most outstanding vehicles of the year. The Volt topped the 2011 Nissan Leaf and 2011 Hyundai Sonata, while the Explorer beat out the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2011 Dodge Durango. Few in attendance showed any surprise when the winners' names were announced.
