Faster, flashier and even more efficient than the LP 560-4 it replaces, the revamped Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera brings a new dimension of total performance to this Italian supercar. Loads of carbon fiber, polycarbonate in place of side and rear glass elements and widespread use of low-mass alloys helped cut over 150 pounds from this latest "Superlight" variant compared to the LP 560-4 Superlegerra that ceased production in 2008. Even the seats are wrapped in Alcantara instead of heavier leather. Collectively, those efforts bring this latest incarnation in at 2,954 pounds -- and make it the trimmest of all current road-going Lamborghinis. Revised front bodywork with larger air intakes, improved underbody fairings and a more efficient rear diffuser do their respective parts to clean up aero drag, as well.

On the other side of the power-to-weight equation, the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera benefits from modifications to its 5.2-liter V10. Mounted longitudinally behind the passenger compartment, this high-winding engine gains direct fuel injection and recalibrated control mapping that yields an additional 10 horsepower -- bringing its new count to 570 -- while dropping CO2 emissions and raising its fuel economy by 20.5 percent. That force, plus 398 lb-ft of peak torque, can be channeled to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual or available paddle-shifted and automated e-gear alternative that features three shifting programs, including a special "Thrust Mode" that optimizes its off-the-line launching prowess.

Lambo says its new Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera will streak to 60 mph in less than 3.4 seconds and reach 202 mph. To keep things under control at all velocities, the car also boasts a race-bred chassis with a custom-tailored stability system and massive anti-lock brakes -- carbon-ceramics are optional -- as well as 19-inch forged aluminum wheels shod with fat, sticky, near-competition-spec Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera's bespoke version of Lamborghini's all-wheel drive system incorporates a viscous center coupling that doles out torque in a normal 30/70 percent front/rear split and features a 45-percent limited slip rear differential.
