2009 World Car of the Year Awards
In addition to several worldwide and North American vehicle debuts, the New York Auto Show plays host to the World Car of the Year announcement. The first WCOTY award was handed out in 2005 and went to the Audi A6. The BMW 3 Series claimed the title in 2006, followed by the Lexus LS 460 in 2007. Last year, from a field consisting of 39 entries nominated by 47 jurors from 24 countries, the Mazda2 (a Honda Fit competitor not currently sold in the U.S., pictured at left) emerged the victor. In addition to about a dozen vehicles not sold in North America, this year's hopefuls include all-new nameplates like the BMW X6, Hyundai Genesis and Nissan GT-R, as well as redesigns like the Audi A4, Honda Fit and Infiniti FX.
