First seen in Geneva, the bad boy of the MAZDA3 lineup gets an all-new look for 2010 as well as loads of functional upgrades aimed at helping it curry even more favor with hard-line enthusiasts. While basic bodywork bits are shared with the new MAZDA3 five-door, the "SPEED3" gets its own bolder front end treatment including a new hood scoop that increases the efficiency of its turbo intercooler. Bigger fender flares, a tasteful rear spoiler and new 18-inch alloys wheels with 225/40 Dunlop Sport SP2050 performance tires round out the look. While its 263-horsepower/2.3-liter direct-injected T-charged four carries over unchanged, ratio spreads in its slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox have been revised to make better use of the engine's 280 pound-feet of torque. Handling in this 155-mph front-driver also gets tweaked, courtesy of a notably stiffer unit body as well as specific revisions to its suspension tuning and power steering. Brake feel also is enhanced and the anti-lock discs replace mechanical with electronically-controlled Brake Assist. Inside, the MAZDASPEED3 also one-up the 2010 MAZDA3 redesign with a dedicated black/red color scheme, model-specific instrument markings and a new LED boost gauge.
