2008 Lotus Elise SC: Less Extreme but More Fun

The ultra-lightweight Lotus Elise is one of the most single-minded automobiles in the world, but its 189-horsepower engine features a dual personality revealed by an extreme power spike at around 6,000 rpm. The prescription? Add a supercharger. The enhanced engine doesn't only deliver more power than the normally aspirated version -- 218 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque -- it provides more of that power at lower engine speeds and makes the new Elise SC more fun around town, more fun in the mountains and faster everywhere. Lotus claims the Elise SC will reach 60 mph from a stop in a scant 4.4 seconds.
