2008 Lexus RX 400h: A Hybrid for the Highway

By Editors on May 2, 2008 1:28 PM
We recently spent 800-plus miles behind the wheel of Lexus' hybrid crossover, giving us the chance to see how it fared on the open road. Traveling at highway speeds with cruise control gave us an average fuel consumption of 23.6 mpg, just under the EPA estimate of 24 and slightly above its gasoline twin RX 350's highway mileage of 23. Although this hybrid sees the best numbers in stop-and-go traffic, we found the extra torque supplied by the electric motors -- in combination with the hybrid's "gearless" transmission -- to be extremely helpful in delivering smooth and immediate acceleration in merging and passing situations.
