16 Best Family Cars: 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

By KBB.com Editors on February 4, 2016 12:00 AM

The Chevrolet Malibu is all-new for 2016 and beautiful on the inside and out, but there is a lot more to this car than just good looks. The new Malibu is more fuel-efficient, roomier, safer and better connected than ever before. If you are considering a midsize sedan for your family's needs, the Malibu deserves a look.

Efficient and Safe

Two features that would pique the interest of many family-car buyers are fuel economy and safety, and the Malibu excels in both. It's currently available with a choice of two robust 4-cylinder engines, which offer up to 37 mpg on the highway, among the best in its class. (A hybrid will be available later this year with an estimated fuel economy of 48 mpg in the city.)

There are numerous safety features such as 10 standard airbags, a rearview camera, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Alert and Automatic Parking Assist. Have a teenage driver in the family? The Malibu sets itself apart from the competition with the Teen Driver suite of technologies. This system includes measures that encourage teens to drive safely: the audio system stays muted until everyone is wearing their seatbelt, plus parents can monitor where the car has been driven, and has warnings the driver sees and hears when the car goes over a preset speed.

Comfortable, Accommodating Interior

The new Malibu, longer than the previous model, now has a more spacious second row, a weak spot in the last Malibu. The interior is quiet and plush, and filled with amenities that make it easy to stay connected: MyLink with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot capability, several USB ports, Bluetooth and navigation. Adding to the Malibu's interior comfort is the ride quality. The Malibu's suspension is compliant but not too soft, doing a nice job of absorbing road irregularities.

With plenty of room to relax, amenities that can keep a new driver safe, and efficient engines, with a starting price of less than $23,000, the Malibu is ready to report for family car duty.
