Karma Automotive, the California-based maker of the Revero luxury plug-in hybrid EV, gave a glimpse of its future product portfolio by debuting a trio of vehicles at the Shanghai Motor Show. The company, which was formed out of the bankruptcy of the former Fisker Automotive, unveiled the updated 2020 Revero GT, the Karma Pininfarina GT Coupe and the Karma SC1 Vision Concept, an all-electric roadster.

The biggest change to the all-new 2020 Karma Revero GT is its switch from a GM-sourced 4-cylinder engine to a BMW 3-cylinder engine in the extended range plug-in luxury sedan. The turbocharged engine is used as an on-board generator for the twin electric motors powering the Revero sedan. System output is rated at 536 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. Karma says the Revero can acceleration to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The plug-in has a pure electric battery range of up to 80 miles and can go 360 miles on a tank of fuel.

In addition to the engine swap, the new Revero, dubbed the 2.0 internally, has lighter, while having more structural enhancements to the body. The body panels are also new with seams tightened and recontoured without losing the iconic look of the sedan. The new Revero GT will be launched in the second half of this year. The 2019 model, which is being phased out, is priced from $130,000.

Karma Pininfarina GT

A more mid-range future product will be a new coupe based off the Revero chassis. The product of a collaboration with the famed Italian design house, the Karma Pininfarina GT is a handsome 2-door that breaks new design ground for the company. Said to be production ready, Karma hasn’t given specifics on when or where the new model will be built, although it does have the capacity to produce up to 10,000 vehicles at its California factory in Moreno Valley.

 According to Karma CEO Dr. Liang “Lance” Zhou, the project represents a company plan to “use partnerships to speed up development of products and technologies. Our business and product plan is driven in part by collaborating with like-minded and nimble partners such as Pininfarina, whose design expertise will help us accelerate product development, differentiation, and personalized customization so every Karma built can be truly special. Karma does not yet have the deep financial and in-house technological resources of an established OEM, but we will use partnerships to accelerate our progress by acquiring and developing key technologies important to connectivity, performance, artificial intelligence, shared mobility platforms, and electrification.”

Karma SC1 Vision Concept

This 2-seat concept is a glimpse of the company’s long-range plan to introduce battery electric models to its portfolio. Karma says the look of the car is a reinterpretation of the Revero’s design language and also a showcase for its plans to offer customization options to its buyers. Among the new features showcased in the SC1 is a new infotainment architecture based around 5G technology, and a user interface that features natural speech, touch, eye and graphic elements to control vehicle systems.

Karma did not offer any technical specs on the electric drivetrain or chassis since the SC1 Vision Concept is primarily a design study.
