With the Acura TLX PMC Edition, the Japanese automaker is looking for some rub-off from the NSX supercar onto the brand’s more mainstream products. “PMC” stands for Performance Manufacturing Center, the special Ohio production facility that turns out the NSX. This limited-edition TLX is assembled in part at that NSX plant and features a heretofore NSX-exclusive paint color and process, as well as special trim and equipment.

“We designed the PMC not only to build NSX, but to give Acura the flexibility to explore handcrafted production of limited-edition models,” said Jon Ikeda, who heads the Acura brand. “The TLX and MDX PMC Edition are the first to take advantage of this unique capability, and we intend to explore additional options.”

High level of equipment

The PMC Edition comes exclusively with the optional 3.5-liter V6 (bypassing the 2.4-liter inline-four), 9-speed automatic, and available all-wheel drive. Engine output is unchanged at 290 horses and 267 lb-ft of torque.

To that, it adds all three TLX option packages as standard equipment:

  • Technology Package (including navigation, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, Acura/ELS premium audio, Milano leather, 12-way power seat)
  • Advance Package (surround-view camera, remote start, auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, wireless device charging, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, heated and ventilated front seats, white ambient lighting, among other items)
  • A-Spec Package (firmer springs and dampers, a stiffer rear anti-roll bar, and retuned power steering, plus a bundle of sport-appearance items including a restyled lower fascia, dark chrome and matte black exterior trim, dual oval exhaust tips, a gloss black decklid spoiler, red instrument cluster lighting, metallic interior trim, and a black headliner).


Ordinarily, the Advance and A-Spec packages cannot be combined.

The black leather and Alcantara interior features red contrast stitching, metal-finished shift paddles, and – of course – an individually numbered plaque. All PMC Editions will be finished in Valencia Red Pearl – a color previously exclusive to the NSX – contrasted with a black roof, with the 19-inch wheels, door handles, and grille also in gloss black.

Assembly at the NSX Plant

The paint color isn’t just an NSX hue, it’s applied using the same process used on the Acura supercar at the NSX assembly plant. The special paint-application process takes a total of five days.

Partially assembled TLX cars are transported from the standard production line in Marysville, Ohio, to the dedicated NSX facility just down the road. There, the cars are painted, and assembly is completed including installation of the powertrain, chassis components, and interior. Just like the NSX, the finished cars are checked over including on a dyno, and are shipped to dealers individually with a special car cover in enclosed transports.

The TLX PMC Edition should arrive in dealerships this summer. Acura isn’t releasing exact pricing just yet but is saying that TLX PMC Edition will be around $50,000. Once the 360-unit TLX run is completed, look for Acura to give the MDX 3-row SUV a similar treatment, with that model appearing in concept form alongside the TLX PMC Edition at the New York auto show.
