Although the new 911 captured most of the limelight on the Porsche stand at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, the German company also revealed a track model called the 911 GT2 RS Clubsport. Porsche calls the new Clubsport “the most powerful, non-street legal, GT customer car we’ve ever built.”

Described another way, this 700-horsepower 911, limited to 200 units globally, is a racing version of the street-legal Porsche 911 GT2 RS sports car, replete with an integral safety cage, air jacks, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and suspension with spherical rod-end bearings. As such, Porsche says the new 911 GT2 RS Clubsport is eligible to compete in Porsche Club of America track days, as well as selected other motorsport events.

Fit for competition

“For the upcoming years, our customers will not only race the GT2 RS Clubsport during open track days but also at international motor racing events. We are currently holding very productive talks with the race organizer SRO,” says Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche’s Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars.

Class of 2019: The redesigned cars, trucks, and SUVs

Like the retro cool 935 unveiled at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in September, the GT2 RS Clubsport is powered by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-6 engine rigidly mounted to a 7-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox controlled by shift paddles on the steering wheel. The 700-horsepower engine, in classic 911 tradition, is mounted behind the rear axle, for improved balance in braking and acceleration. Massive 6-piston front brakes work with huge 15.4-inch vented brake rotors, while the 4-piston rears act on 15.0-inch discs.

Selectable stability settings

The 3,064-pound Clubsport, like the street-legal 911 GT2 RS, has Porsche Stability Management (PSM), traction control and ABS, but a switch on its center console allows the driver to adjust each for varying needs at individual tracks. These systems also can be completely shut off, depending upon conditions at each track.

Further setting the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport apart are a carbon-fiber steering wheel and color instrument display, both taken from the roadgoing Porsche 911 GT3 R model. While air conditioning is an unexpected luxury, the racing bucket seat (from Recaro) and 6-point safety harness are not. Porsche says the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport carries an MSRP of $478,000, before destination and import fees.

Deliveries are expected to begin in May 2019.
