2019 Nissan Sentra

Starting Price: $19,375 (w/CVT automatic) | Price yours

Above Average: Fuel economy, big trunk, available turbocharged engine, standard automatic emergency braking

Below Average: Acceleration with base engine

Consensus: A sporty small sedan with compelling features, excellent fuel economy and decent resale all at a reasonable price.

2019 Toyota Corolla

Starting Price:  $19,620 | Price yours

Above Average: Fuel economy, resale value, low price, standard Safety Sense-P driver assists

Below Average:  Weak acceleration, limited choice of features and trims, limited infotainment and tech features

Consensus:  An excellent all-around value prospect for those who value safety and reliability over gadgets and performance.

The Nissan Sentra has a bit more style than the Toyota Corolla, but the Corolla’s interior feels a bit more premium. However, when it comes to rear-seat legroom, the Toyota is the clear winner, although the Nissan does have a larger trunk. Neither car offers much in the way of horsepower or performance, although the Sentra’s optional turbocharged engine gives it a leg up over the Corolla. Both compact sedans offer standard automatic emergency braking on every model with an automatic transmission, but the Toyota safety suite is more complete, adding adaptive cruise control, auto high beams and lane departure warning. Both cars cost about the same, but the Corolla holds higher resale values than the Sentra. The Sentra’s infotainment system isn’t as sophisticated as the Corolla’s Entune setup, but it does come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two features the Corolla doesn’t offer.

Nissan Sentra Advantages

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, big trunk, tight turning circle, optional turbocharged engine, NISMO performance trim

Toyota Corolla Advantages

Low price, big back seat, uncomplicated controls, robust driver assist suite, resale value, 5-star crash rating

Low price, good reliability ratings, excellent fuel economy, standard driver assists, roomy interior

Final Recommendation

If you’re a tech type, the Sentra gets the nod thanks to its available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, not to mention an optional turbocharged engine. However, if resale, simplicity of design and the latest in driver assists rings your bell, the Corolla is the car for you.
