The all-new 2019 Audi A7 made its first auto show appearance since being unveiled late last year. The revamped second-generation A7 retains its Sportback body style that features a rear hatch for increased utility.

While it retains the sleek lines of its predecessor, the new A7 incorporates styling cues that represent an evolution in Audi’s design philosophy. This new approach features large surfaces defined by sculpted character lines and a more horizontal execution of the division’s single frame signature grille.

Interior enhancements include more space and increased comfort for rear seat passengers with increased head and legroom. Rear cargo space is 18.9 cubic feet, which expands to 49.1 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded down. The new cabin design emphasizes horizontal lines and a sleeker instrument panel, which also boosts the perception of spaciousness. The center console is angled towards the driver, emphasizing the dynamic handlings of the Sportback.

Advanced lighting

The exterior design changes are further defined by the extensive use of LED lighting. The headlamps are actually 12 adjacent lighting segments separated by narrow spaces, while at the rear, a strip of 13 vertical segments join together to form a continuous taillamp. The lights move back and forth for an animated effect when the vehicle is locked or unlocked. Lighting is also used to give the interior a more upscale feel, thanks to use of the contour lights lining the center console and door trim.

The A7’s infotainment system uses the same new MMI touch response control strategy that replaces the conventional buttons and the previous rotary knob. Audi says haptic and acoustic feedback make the MMI system as easy and intuitive to use as a smartphone. The menu configuration also allows fast access to various vehicle functions and controls can be personalized using configurable “favorites” buttons.

Power comes from a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 340 horsepower. The powertrain incorporates a mild hybrid system that recovers energy through regenerative braking and provides an additional boost under hard acceleration. The A7 also is one of the first cars to use a 48-volt system to run both the hybrid system and the vehicle’s electronics.
