UPDATE:  You can now read our first review of the 2019 Audi A6

Audi’s new 2019 A6 is not only sportier in appearance, but is full of new driver-focused technology, new engines with a mild hybrid component and features a more premium interior. The midsize sedan, in its eighth generation, is one of the German auto maker’s highlights at the Geneva Motor Show.

With a wider grille, new flat headlights and redesigned air intakes, the face of the A6 is more athletic than the current model. That muscular look is carried through the rear fenders haunches, while the back end also has been updated, with new, more dynamic taillights connected by a chrome styling strip.

Exterior proportions don’t change much, but the new A6 gains 0.3 inches in length, 0.5 inches in width and 0.1 inches in height. These gains translate to a slightly larger interior than its predecessor. Rear legroom is improved and head room and shoulder room for front and back seat passengers is better than the current A6. A wider trunk opening also eases loading.

Elegant cabin

The interior design is cleaner and simpler, yet is more elegant than the outgoing model with a sleeker leather instrument panel and new center stack design. A digital MMI touch response infotainment display is titled to the left, toward the driver. Interior upgrades also include a redesigned gear shifter and new seats, including optional front ventilation and massage features. Two ambient lighting packages are offered for the interior to accent the space. Air quality packages are optional, as is a panoramic sunroof and heated windshield.

In Europe, the 2019 A6 will be offered with two new engines, a diesel and gasoline variant. The 3.0-liter, turbocharged V6 engine, likely to be offered in the U.S., produces 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, providing acceleration to 62 mph in just 5.1 seconds. The V6 is mated to a 7-speed S dual-clutch automatic transmission. (The 2018 Audi A6 is offered in the U.S. with either a 3.0-liter V6 engine and 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission or a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with front-wheel drive.)

Diesel offered in Europe

A 3.0-liter TDI diesel engine announced at the introduction provides 286 horsepower and more than 457 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Both engines for the European A6 come standard with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. Audi is also employing a standard 48-volt mild-hybrid setup to enhance fuel economy. The system, combining a belt alternator starter and lithium-ion battery, allows the A6 to coast between 34 and 99 mph, while start-stop runs up to 13.7 mph. Ride comfort is enhanced and noise decreased on the new model, Audi says. The redesigned model has a new suspension and all-wheel steering, which raises the vehicle’s agility.

Drivers will find new and enhanced technology at their fingertips. Audi’s digital MMI touch response system gives a click sound and haptic feedback when users make a selection. An optional MMI navigation plus system offers several enhanced and new navigation services. And the 2019 Audi A6 will feature new driver assistance offerings that can even automatically park your car for you on the street or in a garage.

While the redesigned Audi A6 is slated to go on sale this June in Europe, U.S. introduction won't come until sometime in the fourth quarter with pricing announced closer to the launch. The current 2018 Audi A6 starts at $49,700 here.
