Also sharing the Geneva spotlight with two new Panamera models is the updated 2018 Porsche 911 GT3, a high performance street car that incorporates a new engine used in the German automaker’s racing program. In addition to the new engine, the 911 GT3 also benefits from improvements to the suspension, lighter weight construction and a new rear steering axle.

The heart of the GT3 has always been the flat 6-cylinder engine and that part of the equation doesn’t change as the new 4.0-liter normally aspirated powerplant produces 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque. The high revving engine is based on the one now used in all 911 race cars including the 911 GT3 R and 911 RSR. With a power-to-weight ratio of 6.4 pounds per horsepower, the 2018 911 GT3 can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 198 mph. The engine can be mated to either a traditional 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed PDK dual clutch automatic.

Lightened for quickness

Tipping the scales at just 3,116 pounds, the 911 GT3 incorporates a lightweight front fascia and front spoiler configured for optimum airflow. A carbon fiber rear wing is not only light, but also provides additional downforce when the car is travelling at high speeds. And as a further weight reduction step, the rear seats have been eliminated.

In addition to a retuned suspension, the 911 GT3 features new active rear steering. Depending on vehicle speed, the rear wheels are steered either in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels improving vehicle agility and stability. The car is also equipped with a rear locking differential and dynamic engine mounts to boost vehicle dynamics.

New interior features

Chief among the interior upgrades is a new GT Sport steering wheel with a 14.1-inch diameter adapted from the 918 supercar. Sport Seats Plus have more aggressive bolsters for better lateral support and are electrically adjustable for height and seatback angle along with 18 other adjustments for lumbar and thigh support. The car is also equipped with a power adjustable steering column and a memory function. Optional carbon fiber back sport seats are optional.

The Porsche Communication Management is also standard on the 911 GT3 and features navigation, real time traffic and Apple CarPlay along with the Porsche Track Precision App that allows drivers to record, display and analyze vehicle performance data on their smartphones.

The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 is slated to reach U.S. showrooms this fall and will be priced from $143,600 plus $1,050 delivery.
