After its world premiere in Geneva earlier this year, the new 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross made its North American debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. A compact SUV set to slot between the automaker’s Outlander Sport and Outlander models and take on the likes of the Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage, this boldly styled 5-passenger hauler is set to hit U.S. showrooms in the spring.

Reflecting a more assertive take on Mitsubishi’s current design language, the Eclipse Cross has a wedge-shaped profile set off with strong character lines. Its aggressively edgy front fascia embodies the firm’s “Dynamic Shield” design and is highlighted by a black central area the automaker claims symbolizes the “performance” of this compact newcomer. Out back, the Eclipse Cross' steeply raked rear glass is effectively split by distinctive tubular LED taillamps and a high-mount stoplight.

Built on the same platform as its Outlander/Outlander Sport siblings, the 2018 Eclipse Cross also shares their 105.1-inch wheelbase. Inside, the cabin introduces a selection of contemporary styling tweaks to the existing corporate themes that impart a more upscale character while improving user-friendliness. The more horizontal dash features a new thin-display audio package and the Eclipse Cross will offer a Smartphone Link Display Audio system, console-mounted Touchpad Controller and a Head-Up Display . To enhance overall versatility, the new Eclipse Cross matches its front buckets with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat that slides and reclines.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be powered by a new 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine good for 152 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, matched with a continusly variable automatic transmission (CVT). That powertrain drives either the front wheels or all four, via Mitsubishi's impressive Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system.
