It was just two years ago that the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show and already the German automaker is back with facelifted versions that incorporate new design cues, a revamped dash and new driver assists.

The freshened S 560 Coupe and Cabriolet feature new front and rear bumpers, a chrome front splitter, new exhaust finishers, revamped headlamps and organic LED (OLED) rear taillamps. The new 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 produces 463 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque routed through a 9-speed automatic transmission. That output is good for 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.5 seconds in both the 4Matic all-wheel drive Coupe and rear-drive only Cabriolet.

"With their unmistakable, exclusive design and high-class materials with extremely high value appeal in the interior, the new S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet embody our interpretation of modern luxury. On top of that, both luxury four-seaters feature the latest cutting-edge technology from the S-Class," said Britta Seeger, board member responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales.

Widescreen Cockpit

The interior is dominated by what Mercedes calls a Widescreen Cockpit that features twin 12.3-inch high resolution display screens, one that displays virtual instrumentation ahead of the driver and the second in the middle of the dash that handles infotainment and ancillary systems. You can select from three distinct graphic presentations -- Classic, Sporty and Progression – which will mimic the look of traditional analog instrumentation or deliver a more high-tech presentation. Both the Coupe and Cabriolet sport a new steering wheel that also incorporates touch surfaces to interface with the display screens.

The redesign also incorporates a new Energizing Comfort approach that links various systems in the vehicle including climate control, ambient lighting, seat massage functions and fragrance emissions to allow passengers to configure a setup that is in synch with their moods or needs. Up to six distinct programs are available under the Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, Comfort and Training modes. The latter has three settings -- muscle relaxation, muscle activation and balance -- each having separate exercises. The programs run from 10 minutes each and are matched by color graphics on the display, ambient lighting levels and music from the audio system.

The S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet also offer new systems that are building towards the eventual adaptation of autonomous operation. Active Distance Assist Distronic and Active Steering offer enhanced distance and steering control, while speed is automatically adjusted ahead of curves, intersections and traffic circles thanks to greater input from the onboard navigation system.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S 560 Coupe and Cabriolet are expected in U.S. showrooms next year with prices announced closer to the on-sale date.
