The all-new 2018 McLaren 720S made its debut in Geneva matching aggressive looks with the promise of delivering a more engaging experience than the 650S model it replaces. “Super Series is the core of the McLaren business and personifies the blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement that is the McLaren heartland noted Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive. “This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new 720S is absolutely true to McLaren’s pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards -- both for our brand and the supercar segment.”

Light, tight and right

As previously reported, the new 720S was designed to surpass its predecessor in every way. Based on a new carbon fiber Monocage II structure complemented by various aluminum alloy bits and bodywork, the car is nearly 40 pounds lighter than the 650S. The new aluminum and composite bodywork on the 720S offers the most aerodynamic efficiency of any Super Series model ever. Incorporating dihedral doors with a unique double-skin that eliminates the need for external air intakes it also features a new hydraulically actuated rear wing that works with the car’s aggressive diffuser and develops 30 percent more downforce than the 650S.

To make the most of this wind-cheating design, the 720S uses a new iteration of the automaker’s active chassis system dubbed Proactive Chassis Control II. Abetted by Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires on forged alloy wheels, the revamped setup delivers a broader range of grip while matching greater precision with enhanced compliance. The tri-mode Active Dynamics system now works with Variable Drift Control that lets a driver tweak mapping of the stability control system in Sport and Track modes using a slider display on the car’s 8.0-inch center touch screen.

The new McLaren supercar features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Sitting amidships and mated to a faster-shifting version of the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic that sends power to the rear wheels, the engine has a longer stroke and features 41 percent new component parts compared to the 3.8-liter unit it replaces. Developing 710 horsepower and 565 lb-ft of torque (respective bumps of 69 and 64 output units), the new 720S streaks from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds on to a 212 mph top speed.

Information at a touch

Although riveting performance is the car’s forte, the new McLaren 720S also features a cabin that matches additional space and better sightlines with superior levels of comfort and convenience. Finished in fine leather, brushed aluminum and carbon fiber, the highlight of the 720S a folding driver display that presents a full array of data or pivot 90 degrees and assume its Slim Display Mode that offers only the most essential info. Deliveries of the 2018 McLaren 720S are set to start in May, although U.S. pricing has not yet been released, it’s expected to start around $300,000.
