Following up on the reveal of the 2018 LC 500 Coupe at the North American International Auto show in Detroit, Lexus announced that a hybrid version of the car will be shown in Geneva. The 2018 Lexus LC 500h will be fitted with an all-new Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System, a next-gen gas/electric package designed endow to this new 2+2 coupe  with “enhanced driving pleasure, more performance and greater efficiency.”

As for details on the drivetrain, Lexus says the LC 500h’s new Multi Stage Hybrid System was developed to meet opposing and ambitious goals. It wanted a powertrain that more closely aligns engine speed with throttle input to create an engaging driving experience while still delivering the best balance between power and efficiency. To do so, Lexus matched a 295-horsepower version of its 3.5-liter gasoline-fired V6 with a compact, lightweight electric motor fed by a lithium-ion battery pack. This combo is teamed with a 4-speed automatic transmission mounted aft of the existing CVT hybrid transmission – creating the functional equivalent of the 10-speed fitted in the standard LC 500 Coupe.

Collectively, this new Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System cranks out 354 horsepower, sufficient to send the new LC 500h sprinting from 0-60 mph in well under five seconds. It also introduces a new-for-Lexus “M Mode,” a tweak that allows a driver take full advantage of the additional sporting potential by directly initiating gear changes via steering-wheel mounted shift paddles.

Like its conventional counterpart, the LC 500h Hybrid shares the same bold styling inspired by the LF-LC Concept car and also will be based around the all-new Lexus GA-L global architecture specifically developed for its rear-drive luxury vehicles. The structure uses a combination of aluminum, high-strength steel and carbon fiber to create solid, rigid foundation that optimizes both vehicle dynamics and passenger protection. Expect the new 2018 Lexus LC 500h model to arrive in showrooms early next year along with the regular LC 500 Coupe.
