Expanding the performance envelope, the new 2017 Lamborghini Aventador S has been revealed with upgrades that further burnish the reputation this latest Raging Bull. With a bolder look, more power, a re-engineered suspension and new 4-wheel steering plus an additional EGO drive-mode setting, the 2017 Aventador S is “the expression of new technological and performance milestones in super sports car development,” says Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Sleeker and more agile

While its redesigned bodywork remains true to the marque, exterior changes to the new Aventador S enhances the aero profile. Penned by Lamborghini Centro Stile, a more aggressive front fascia, extended splitter and new outboard air ducts help raise front downforce by 130 percent compared to the previous Aventador S Coupe while the revised rear treatment with a more efficient diffuser and a tri-position wing improves dynamic balance and helps boost rear downforce by 50 to 400 percent depending on its setting. The underbody fairings are redesigned to improve air flow and brake cooling.

The heart of the Aventador S is a revised version of the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 nestled aft of the passenger compartment and backed by Lambo’s ISR (Independent Shifting Rod) 7-speed transmission. Fitted with an economy-enhancing start/stop system as well as cylinder deactivation, this throaty V12 now makes 730 horsepower, up 40 thanks to more effective Variable Valve Timing and Variable Intake systems that also “enrich” its torque curve although eak twist units remain at 509 lb-ft. The 3,472-lb Anentador S can flash from 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 217 mph.

While retaining the same carbon fiber structure and aluminum subframes, the underpinnings of this new Lamborghini also have been redesigned to improve both ride and handling. The upgraded pushrod suspension elements, Magneto-rheological dampers, stability control and steering now work with 4-wheel drive setup than can send up to 90 percent of the torque to the rear tire. A new 4-wheel steering system – the first ever on a series-production Lamborghini – improves high-speed cornering stability and low-speed maneuverability.

All of it functions under the control of the Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva system that draws real-time input from on-board sensors to dial up the best settings for any driving condition. As before, the Aventador S also offers a driver-selectable multi-mode system but this time around the Strada (Street), Sport and Strada (Track) settings are joined by a new EGO mode that allows the operator to create a custom profile for the engine, transmission, suspension, steering and AWD. The Aventador S rides on new Pirelli P Zero tires designed for this application and relies on vented/perforated carbon-ceramic brakes to provide consistent stopping power.

The cabin of the new Aventador S boasts upgrades including a new TFT digital dash layout with selectable displays for each driving mode. Apple CarPlay is standard while an optional telemetry system records lap times, track day performance and trip data. As in the past, Lamborghini’s Ad Personam program will allow any buyer to add a number of unique touches. The 2017 Lamborghini Aventador S is slated to arrive in showrooms here next spring. Pricing will start at $421,350 excluding Gas Guzzler Tax and destination fees which are expected to add about $7,200 to that figure.
