Previewed in photos at the New York Auto Show last April, the 2016 Honda HR-V crossover made its official in-the-metal debut in Los Angeles. Based on the same platform that underpins the new 2015 Fit subcompact, this more aggressively cast alternative is slightly larger and more spacious overall and offers an all-wheel-drive option that should enhance its appeal to the young, active-lifestyle buyers who don't need the added size or cost of a CR-V. Honda boasts that in addition to outstanding versatility, the new HR-V will match class-leading fuel economy with spirited dynamics. 

Available in Honda's familiar LX, EX and leather-lined EX-L trim grades, the 2016 HR-V boasts a long list of standard equipment that includes a full range of power assists, multifunction steering wheel on a tilt/telescoping column, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink,  and Pandora. The interior features loads of soft-touch surfaces set off by piano black and brushed-chrome highlights that add an upscale feel. To make the most of its roomy cabin, the HV-R also is fitted with Honda's trick reconfigurable second-row "Magic Seat," that can increase the baseline 24.3 cu ft of cargo space to an impressive 58.8 cu ft when fully folded - a stat approaching that of several mid-size SUVs

Premium touches 

Stepping up to EX/EX-L grades adds features ranging from heated front seats, a power sunroof, navigation, Smart Entry/Push-Button Start, a Display Audio telematics interface with 7.0-inch touchscreen to SiriusXM, HD Radio, Honda Digital Traffic, Honda LaneWatch and leather trim. Designed to earn top safety marks from NHTSA and the IIHS, the HR-V complements its robust body structure with numerous driver/passenger protection features such as Hill Start Assist, a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera; dual-stage/multiple-threshold front airbags, driver/front-passenger SmartVent side airbags and side-curtain airbags.

The sole engine in the 2016 Honda HR-V is Honda's 1.8-liter/4-cylinder i-VTEC that makes 138 horses and 127 lb-ft of torque. It can be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or CVT automatic in front-drive, while models fitted with Honda's Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control will be CVT only. The 2016 Honda HR-V will arrive in showrooms here early next year. Pricing, final packaging and EPA fuel economy numbers will be released closer to the actual on-sale date.
