Presented last at the Paris Auto Show, the 2016 Fiat 500X debuted in Los Angeles with features, packaging and powertrain choices tailored to the U.S. market. This slick subcompact crossover slots between the standard 500 and 500L and shares a fair portion of its mechanical underpinnings with the new 2015 Jeep Renegade. However the 500X has unique interior/exterior styling treatment and chassis tuning as well as a distinctive personality that Fiat expects will attract a broader group of buyers.

Set to arrive in showrooms sometime during the first half of 2015, the new Fiat 500X will be offered in five trims ranging from Pop, Easy and Lounge to the more active-lifestyle-oriented Trekking and Trekking Plus that boast bespoke front/rear fascia treatments along with other specific accents. Buyers here will have the choice of two 4-cylinder gasoline engines. The front-drive 500X Pop comes with Fiat's familiar 160-horsepower/1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo matched to a 6-speed manual transmission while all other models pack a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter/180-horse Tigershark MultiAir2 paired with a sophisticated 9-speed automatic. That combo also will permit upgrading to an advanced all-wheel-drive system with a disconnecting rear axle to help improve fuel economy when AWD isn't required. The system also has a Dynamic Selector enabling the driver dial up Auto, Sport or Traction+ modes to match on/off-road conditions

Pairing front bucket seats with a 60/40 split-folding rear bench, the cabin of the 500X mixes space for five and easy configurability with a host of Fiat design cues. All versions come with an impressive selection of standard equipment, including keyless remote entry, air conditioning and some form of Uconnect which includes GPS navigation on the Lounge and Trekking Plus variants. Those two also can upgrade their baseline cloth upholstery to leather. Save for the 500X Pop, several "option collections" permit further personalization with touches that range from a Beats by Dr. Dre premium audio system and dual-pane glass sunroof to advanced safety features including LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus, Full-speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus, ParkView rear backup camera, ParkSense rear park assist and blind-spot monitoring/rear cross path detection. Pricing and more details for the 2016 Fiat 500X lineup will be announced closer to the actual on-sale date.
