Sonata vs. Camry: Midsize heavyweights
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata enters its eighth generation and just keeps getting better with each iteration. While its exterior design is polarizing, inside, it offers tons of features, comfort, and good looks. This Hyundai has a standard 2.5-liter inline-4 engine that makes 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, or an optional 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine rated at 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of trim, the Sonata comes with a suite of safety equipment, driver assists, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and digital key tech as standard. That’s a lot of bang for your buck, considering that in other competitors, you’d have to step up to higher trims to get the same amount of goodies that come in the 2020 Sonata. One feature that takes getting used to is the Sonata’s push-button gear selector, but once you get comfortable with it, it’s a breeze to use.
The 2020 Toyota Camry is one of the best-selling sedans for good reason. It combines good looks, decent dynamics, pricing, options, and Toyota’s reputation for safety and reliability. Toyota recently showed off its all-wheel drive Camry making it one of only three sedans (Subaru Legacy and Nissan Altima) to offer this feature. It also comes in a hybrid, should you want to save at the gas pump. The Camry has always been comfortable and compliant on the road. While the Camry isn’t as agile as the Honda Accord, it’s still capable enough. Toyota has finally added Android Auto to the 2020 Camry (it already came with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa), for this year and offers the Camry in a limited TRD version as well. The Camry comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense -P suite of safety tech and driver assistance aids, too.
A suite of standard safety and technology features come in both vehicles.
Hyundai Sonata Advantages
Pricing and a stellar warranty
Toyota Camry Advantages
All-wheel-drive available, great resale
This is a close race to call. If you’re looking for an all-wheel-drive sedan, the Camry outdoes the Sonata. If you want something that offers a bit more styling for a bit less money, go with the Sonata.
