"Unfortunate to have bought in 2006, in between the free factory maintenance which runs approx at least 300 per 15000. Currently 44k miles have had to replace front brakes and tires on their last leg. Back brakes will be next (~800). Replaced rear tail light 3 times, easily breaks (280/ea). Bad computer software caused the car to lose gear with no acceleration - needed tow (w/in 12k miles). Air filter is special and expensive (roughly 150). A factory defect at 38k miles where the wheel hubs seized up to axle? and made loud noise as if car was in low gear..900 bucks (within maint). Windshield 1000. Lock ignition cylinder would not allow key in ignition - part from sweden, 800 bucks. Gas mileage approx 16-18 in city, 20 at best on highway. Check engine light on 3 times in past 3 months..."

Pros: "Super comfortable for family roadtrips. Safest SUV around"

Cons: "Can be expensive to maintain."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"OK, so this has been a great vehicle for my wife and family but there are definitely some things to be aware of. I bought this used, and would have NEVER paid what they sell for new because it can be an expensive vehicle to own/maintain. If you can find a well maintained, used one for $10-$12K, I would definitely recommend it. When you compare the quality, comfort and safety to other 7 passenger SUV's in the same price range, it's not even close. The trade off is that repairs can be expensive, especially if it hasn't been properly cared for. Dealers and Volvo specialists sometimes want CRAZY money for minor repairs/maintenance, so I do the simple stuff myself (air filter was $30 at Shuck's and took 10 minutes to replace vs. $160 at the dealer). Mileage isn't great, but that's true of most big 7 passenger SUV's. The real benefit to me is the comfort and safety. it's hands-down the nicest car I've ever had for long road trips, and is super smooth on the highway. Make sure it's been cared for, and if the price is right, go for it."

"Truly enjoy driving this car. This was a used, post-lease SUV, 2.5 turbo, 5 cyl, AWD, 7-seater with about 39k miles when I bought it. Now have 90k miles. i commute 70-100 mi a day. Handles very well. Turning radius is not the best but that's tolerable for me. Very comfortable and use it for everything, work, grandkids, occasional car pool, carry horse feed...except what i need my truck to haul. Gets me out of deepest snow and mud (had to replace with good tires, first). Repairs so far- sensor/computer issue cost about $400. Otherwise nave only had regular maintenance, new tires. One peeve is only Volvo dealer can do certain things like turn off a maintenance indicator. Not a big deal but a little irritating. Was rear-ended last week. The pontiac that hit me was a mess. All I had was dust scuffs on the bumper. Since I drive a lot, safety and solid handling are a priority. This car does it for me. Love it."

Pros: "Reliable, good fuel economy, safe"

Cons: "Repairs (if needed) are costly, tires"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"Bought our 2004 XC90 2.5 about 5 years ago. Since then only oil changes, a break job (3000$ once all said and done - new calipers, discs and as the parking break was done as well) - other than that no real problems. Some quality issues (DVD system went a year ago, one of the door speakers - tweeters broke off, steering wheel volume, channel control went a few years ago). Tires are a bit of an issue as well (Michelins went in 15000 miles). But we are now looking for another XC90 (2009/10) as my wife does not want any other car. So would I recommend it - YES (but it's a premium vehicle so running cost aren't as low as buying cost for vehicle suggest - see cost of break job). Wonderful fuel economy though (21mpg in mostly short range driving)."
