The Volvo XC70 can best be thought of as a rugged version of the popular V70 wagon. Not quite a full-blown crossover or SUV, the XC70 provides the manageable size and reasonable comfort of a wagon teamed with a sophisticated all-wheel drive system and superior ground clearance. Think of it as the twenty-first century version of the quirky AMC Eagle. The XC70's primary competition comes from the Subaru Legacy and Outback wagons and, to a lesser degree, the Dodge Magnum all-wheel-drive wagon.
If you like the look, ride and handling of the V70 wagon, but you need something a bit more rugged, try out the XC70. It offers Eurostyle with a bit of off-road verve.
The XC70's interior is roomy, but nowhere near as spacious as its bigger sibling the XC90 SUV. Similar wagons from Subaru are less expensive, offer more power and hold their original value better than the XC70.
Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) and a tire pressure monitoring system become standard equipment for 2007, as do integrated turn signal mirrors and 16-inch Xenia wheels.
Driving Impressions The XC70 is built on the very competent V70 wagon platform. Except for the rear badges and extra cladding, the two are almost indistinguishable. Power, derived from a turbocharged five-cylinder...
engine producing 208 horsepower, is sent to all four wheels. Due to its height and tires, however, the XC70 does not handle as well as the V70 or S60. Then again, it never gives the impression that it's about to tip on its side, and it can run circles around any SUV on the road. Acceleration is smooth, linear and quiet. The interior is modern, comfortable and, oh, those wonderful Volvo seats you could sit in for days.Navigation Screen
Instead of being incorporated into the audio unit, the Volvo navigation screen rises from atop the dash and can be operated via steering wheel-mounted controls.
Child Booster Seats
Optional integrated child booster seats help little ones see the road.
Interior
The XC70 employs the same functional and handsome interior as the V70. As with all Volvos, safety is of paramount concern. A high-strength steel cage, with crumple zones and reinforced door beams, makes up the skeleton. There are standard front-seat driver- and passenger-side airbags and side-curtain airbags for both front and rear passengers.
Exterior
The XC70 is a close cousin to the V70 wagon, but extra-thick black bumpers and a tall ride-height (8.5-inches of ground clearance) give the XC70 a bit more of an off-road appearance, as do the black grille surround, aluminum cladding and alloy wheels.
The XC70 comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, alarm system, illuminated remote keyless entry, front and rear fog lights, AM/FM stereo with CD, heated outside mirrors, front side-impact and front and rear head-curtain airbags, eight-way power driver's seat with memory, cruise control, skid plate protection, 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear wiper/washer.
Options include a power passenger seat, power glass moonroof, leather seats, tinted rear windows, third-row seating, navigation, bi-xenon headlamps, premium audio and integrated child seats.
Volvo's 2.5 light-pressure turbo provides adequate acceleration and fuel economy, but it's no race horse. The unobtrusive turbo kicks in around 2,000 rpm and builds steadily right up to redline. Although a manual transmission is not offered, the five-speed automatic delivers quick, efficient shifts that make the most of the engine's generous torque.
2.5-liter in-line 5 Light-Pressure Turbo
208 horsepower @ 5000 rpm
236 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 71,600
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "Drives great in all conditions, safe and solid!"
Cons: "Expensive for replacement parts, road noise"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9
"This car has been very reliable for us. Very little maintenance, only the recommened services. I do hear that the year of the Volvo makes a lot of difference in the amount of reliabilty you get from your Volvo. Well, 2004 was a great year! I do have a couple of small problems with Volvo though. We bought it used from someone we new who had unfortunatly cut out the third row seatbelts that we replaced - that was expensive! That is one of my two gripes with Volvo, Expensive to replace parts (I lost a very expensive remote key - ugh) Finding the right shop is important. The Spokane area Volvo dealer is tops - had to run in there once on a long road trip (my local dealers short sightedness - Spokane dealer rocks!) My second gripe with this Volvo is road noise! It has a lot. However, I have been told it would make a substantial difference if I would take the all season tires off and put different ones on. But hey, its a cross country, shouldn't it be able to have a heavier tire?"

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 118,000
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "Comfortable, safe, and solid, luxury feel"
Cons: "A little expensive"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10
"This Volvo was extremely comfortable and easy to drive for someone who never felt at ease driving a larger car. The feel of the interior is very luxurious, and it is an excellent car in every way. Most importantly, I recently lost my Volvo after we were hit by a driver going at least 80 miles an hour, but everyone in our car walked away unharmed. The area that was hit was completely destroyed, but the side airbag and the solidity of the car probably saved our lives. It was definitely the best car I've owned, and I will be looking for another just like it!"

"We owned a 2007 XC 70, which got hit on the back at 50 mph and car was totaled. A very safe car, my wife juts walked away from the accident unhurmend. Unfurtuanaly for volvo that is all is got going for it, SAFETY, otherwise this was a very bad car for us. Battery went bad after 30 months, radiator replaced at 40,000 miles , front anxle and control arms replaced at 45,000 miles at a cost of $3,000.00 ,but under warenty and hedious gas milage we averaged 15 mpg for the 6.25 years we owned it."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 109,600
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsCons: "Driver seat split but Colorado sun is hard"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10
"I just love my Volvo and will never own any thing else for a passenger car. I have owned 20+ cars in my lifetime...everything from a huge HD pickup, sports cars, cheap cars, mid size passenger vehicles, domestic and foreign, you name it. BUT this is the longest I've owned a vehicle and its not due to the economy. Fantastic engine - pickup to pass when you need it on two lane winding mountain roads, security - you and your family are safe in this heavy safety cage vehicle, comfortable - short trip or cross country I never have any comfort issues, good on gas. Excellent cup holders. Repairs are pricey at Volvo dealers but you can find other repair shops but watch what the products they install..especially brakes...you want to keep your good quality parts...I've replaced both brakes, radiator, spark plugs, flushed radiator, etc. but at 110K miles in hard conditions of the Rockies, what car would not need these repairs? I highly recommend my XC70 basic model...I did not pay the the high end package."

"this is the second xc70 that ive bought the 1st was a 99 xc70 awd base, i put 550,000 on that car and it still ran great when i traded it in for a newer one. this one drives like a cloud on air and is as safe as a leopard tank, the interior design is great especially in the drivers area."
