2007 Volvo XC70 Review

By

The Volvo XC70 can best be thought of as a rugged version of the popular V70 wagon. Not quite a full-blown crossover or SUV, the XC70 provides the manageable size and reasonable comfort of a wagon teamed with a sophisticated all-wheel drive system and superior ground clearance. Think of it as the twenty-first century version of the quirky AMC Eagle. The XC70's primary competition comes from the Subaru Legacy and Outback wagons and, to a lesser degree, the Dodge Magnum all-wheel-drive wagon.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you like the look, ride and handling of the V70 wagon, but you need something a bit more rugged, try out the XC70. It offers Eurostyle with a bit of off-road verve.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The XC70's interior is roomy, but nowhere near as spacious as its bigger sibling the XC90 SUV. Similar wagons from Subaru are less expensive, offer more power and hold their original value better than the XC70.

What's Significant About This Car?

Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) and a tire pressure monitoring system become standard equipment for 2007, as do integrated turn signal mirrors and 16-inch Xenia wheels.

Driving the XC70

Driving Impressions The XC70 is built on the very competent V70 wagon platform. Except for the rear badges and extra cladding, the two are almost indistinguishable. Power, derived from a turbocharged five-cylinder...

engine producing 208 horsepower, is sent to all four wheels. Due to its height and tires, however, the XC70 does not handle as well as the V70 or S60. Then again, it never gives the impression that it's about to tip on its side, and it can run circles around any SUV on the road. Acceleration is smooth, linear and quiet. The interior is modern, comfortable and, oh, those wonderful Volvo seats you could sit in for days.

Navigation Screen
Instead of being incorporated into the audio unit, the Volvo navigation screen rises from atop the dash and can be operated via steering wheel-mounted controls.

Child Booster Seats
Optional integrated child booster seats help little ones see the road.

2007 Volvo XC70 Details
2007 Volvo XC70 photo Interior

The XC70 employs the same functional and handsome interior as the V70. As with all Volvos, safety is of paramount concern. A high-strength steel cage, with crumple zones and reinforced door beams, makes up the skeleton. There are standard front-seat driver- and passenger-side airbags and side-curtain airbags for both front and rear passengers.

Exterior
2007 Volvo XC70 photo

The XC70 is a close cousin to the V70 wagon, but extra-thick black bumpers and a tall ride-height (8.5-inches of ground clearance) give the XC70 a bit more of an off-road appearance, as do the black grille surround, aluminum cladding and alloy wheels.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The XC70 comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, alarm system, illuminated remote keyless entry, front and rear fog lights, AM/FM stereo with CD, heated outside mirrors, front side-impact and front and rear head-curtain airbags, eight-way power driver's seat with memory, cruise control, skid plate protection, 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear wiper/washer.

Optional Equipment

Options include a power passenger seat, power glass moonroof, leather seats, tinted rear windows, third-row seating, navigation, bi-xenon headlamps, premium audio and integrated child seats.

Under the Hood

Volvo's 2.5 light-pressure turbo provides adequate acceleration and fuel economy, but it's no race horse. The unobtrusive turbo kicks in around 2,000 rpm and builds steadily right up to redline. Although a manual transmission is not offered, the five-speed automatic delivers quick, efficient shifts that make the most of the engine's generous torque.

2.5-liter in-line 5 Light-Pressure Turbo
208 horsepower @ 5000 rpm
236 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25

"This car served me relatively well until the past year when I've had to put more than $5,000. into it for repairs. I now need a transmission and it leaks inside during heavy rains. As a loyal Volvo customer, I am saddened, but this will be my last of 4/5."

Pros: "All wheel drive"

Cons: "Everything under the sun."

"I purchased this car in 2012 with 90000 miles and have had unending trouble. It seems that the check engine light has a timer set for every month, and every time it comes on I have to insert a $1000 dollars. The latest is a transmission that is failing (a $7000 replacement). This car has poor steering dynamics that result in a sluggish feeling in turns. While the engine produces good power and the car accelerates well, the transmission is tuned extremely poorly and clunks into and out of lower gears. The interior initially feels comfortable and well made, but with closer inspection is poorly thought out. The head rests are not adjustable and will force you to sit with your neck extended forward unless you are >6'5 (I am 6'5, my wife is not). Automatic windows have auto up and down feature, but switches wear out and the window will hit the top and automatically roll all the way down, may sound minor but it is infuriating when you are trying to roll up the windows while trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Rear windshield wiper switch is impossible not to constantly bump. Stereo volume knob responds randomly to a turn in a given direction. I realize that this may not reflect all XC 70s and even all from this particular year, but I have hard time forgiving Volvo (or the dealership) for selling such a thoroughly disappointing."

"This car is a dream to drive and I have not had any issues with it. Great in snow, awesome turbo when you need it for the mountain passes or to scoot out of the way. Very comfortable and smooth on road. Great car for Colorado weather!"

Pros: "Safe, solid, reliable, comfortable, not a minivan"

Cons: "More costly to service, decent road noise"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I bought this car new to replace an old Toyota Land Cruiser - that I thought I loved, til I started driving the volvo. It's the perfect car for the anti - minivan mom with no more than 2 kids. Or, if you get the 3rd row seat, 3 medium sized kids. It's solid, the seats are more comfortable than most of the chairs in my house. I struggled to justify the extra cost over a minivan, but it was worth every penny. Just be sure to find an independent shop you trust to service it. It's def more costly than our Hondas we've had before."

"This is my third Volvo, previously I owned a 740GL wagon, an 850GLT sedan, and now my XC70 wagon.I thought I was done with wagons, but this one is so comfortable and versatile, it has an enormous hauling capacity for furniture, moving boxes, plants, luggage, sports equipment and a racing bike. It is reliable, super safe and stylish at the same time. I love my interior which has the classic, real wood trim and full leather. Wonderful for long road trips or just running errands around town. I love this car, which is a good thing, as my husband says it will be a while before I can get a convertible sports car!"
