2013 Volvo S60 Review

By

KBB Expert Rating: 7.9

For the 2013 model year Volvo has endowed its S60 luxury sedan with even more features in the quest to compete in one of the best – if not the best – segments in all of autodom. Facing off against the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and other terrific sedans is no easy task, but the Volvo S60 brings eye-catching exterior styling, a well-tailored interior and a wealth of innovative safety equipment into the fray. Volvo engineers have also outfitted the car with a bevy of performance-enhancing features like the 3.0-liter 325-horsepower engine offered in the R-Design variant accompanied by significant tuning of its standard Sport Chassis. The less-aggressive S60 versions also offer a higher degree of sportiness than you might expect from a Volvo.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you want an attractive European sports sedan, but you don't want to be a slave to the status quo, you'll find the 2013 Volvo S60 offers both driving excitement and unmatched safety features.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If the leading-edge of performance is in your blood and you want the world to know it, others cars in the category might make a clearer statement of your lifestyle choice.

What's New for 2013

The big news for 2013 is the fact that Volvo All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction is available for the first time on the value-priced S60 T5. The 2.5-liter T5 5-cylinder engine also receives internal tweaks that allow it to pull stronger, though peak horsepower and torque remain the same.

Driving the S60
Driving Impressions

Although our one and – up-to-now – only driving experience in the 2013 S60 T5 with all-wheel drive (AWD) was a lengthy one, it did not include rain, snow, hail...

... or sleet. Despite this bad (good?) luck, we can report that the S60 with all-wheel drive offers road poise and confidence that surpass the already high levels of the front-wheel-drive (FWD) version. Volvo offers drivers a variety of choices to match their styles. The base T5 offers a Touring Chassis that is slanted toward comfort, but still feels sporty compared to many offerings. Next up the scale is the more performance-tuned Dynamic Chassis on the T6 AWD, which also benefits from the higher-horsepower 6-cylinder engine and the available FOUR-C active chassis that offers three driving modes. And finally there is the tuner-style R-Design with its Sports chassis. We feel most Volvo buyers will be pleased with the Touring Chassis.

PEDESTRIAN DETECTION WITH FULL AUTO BRAKE
Saying the name takes longer than the feature takes to save a life. The technology alerts the driver to a potential collision with a pedestrian and stops the car as quickly as possible if the driver doesn't immediately react.

CORNER TRACTION CONTROL BY TORQUE VECTORING
Operating on the front wheels of the T5 and the front and rear wheels of all S60 variants equipped with all-wheel drive, torque vectoring channels power to the outer wheel(s) in a corner to help push the car around the corner quicker and more effectively.

2013 Volvo S60 Details
Interior

Volvos have always won praise for their comfortably supportive seats, and the 2013 S60 continues in that tradition. Sports-inspired seats are standard on the T5 and T6 models, while the R-Design is equipped with even more elaborate off-black leather seats emblazoned with the R-Design logo. Heated rear seats are available across the board, warming the hearts (and buns) of Volvo passengers. The S60's instruments are properly straightforward, and Volvo has made its information/entertainment systems easier to operate while at the same time sounding better. The use of Audyssey Laboratories' MultEQ technology, rare in the automotive world, aids the premium audio in achieving clear, crisp sound.

Exterior

Gone are the days when Volvos looked like the crates other cars were shipped in. In a segment populated with great-looking models the S60 is one of the best. Designed in the current idiom of the "4-door coupe," the S60 manages to retain longtime Volvo styling themes like the signature Volvo grille and "double wave" shoulders, while looking not just contemporary but, dare we say it, leading edge. The exterior is dotted quite literally with LEDs, including the front positioning lights, side markers, turn signal indicators and taillights. Trunk space is in keeping with the luxury compacts as a whole – on the small side.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Standard equipment on the base S60 T5 has been upgraded for 2013 to include rain-sensing windshield wipers, headlight washers and dual polished exhaust pipes. For those spelunking enthusiasts in the audience, Volvo has added Tunnel Detection to the headlight system. The Geartronic automatic transmission shift knob is new this year (yes, really) but more to the point the gear selection is illuminated. Heading the list of standard safety equipment is Volvo's Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, which uses electronic means to sense and respond to oversteer (plowing) and understeer (fishtailing).

Optional Equipment

Each S60 trim level is broken down by equipment levels to which you can add option packages. In ascending order, the trim levels are S60 T5, T6 AWD and R-Design. T5 buyers who choose the Premier level get a power glass moonroof, leather seating and keyless drive. The Premier Plus level brings active dual xenon headlights, front and rear parking assist, and a Homelink remote garage door opener. The Platinum level offers a premium 12-speaker, 650-watt sound system plus navigation with real-time traffic. Key features of the Technology package are Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, and Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake. The list of standalone options includes heated rear seats.

Under the Hood

The Volvo S60 offers its buyers the choice of a 2.5-liter inline-5-cylinder engine or a 3.0-liter inline-6. Both engines are turbocharged, and the 3.0-liter is offered in a higher state of tune in the performance-oriented R-Design version of the car. While the 300- and 325-horsepower 3.0-liter engines offer substantially more power than the 250-horsepower 5-cylinder, we never felt the S60 was underpowered with the smaller engine, and those who opt for the 5-cylinder will be rewarded with somewhat better fuel economy. Both engines are backed by the 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission that includes a manual shift mode.

2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5
250 hp @ 5,400 rpm
266 lb-ft @ 1,800-4,200 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/30 mpg (FWD), 20/28 mpg (AWD)

3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6
300 hp @ 5,600 rpm
325 lb-ft @ 2,100-4,200 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/26 mpg

3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6
325 hp @ 5,400 rpm
354 lb-ft @ 3,000-3,600 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/26 mpg

Pros: "Seats, durable materials, safety"

Cons: "Fuel economy, minor quibbles"

"Test drove this plus a bunch of other cars, and this was the winner in my budget. My must have list was all wheel drive, comfortable interior including good sound quality, and reliability. The pros: This car has the nicest looking interior, period bar none. Most comfortable seats by a mile. Great visibility even better with the button that collapses the rear seat headrests. The steering is great, the acceleration is smooth when not in sport mode, pretty fast when you are in sport mode. Handles great in the rain, have yet to drive in the snow since I just got this a few weeks ago. Came with the best CPO warranty short of, what, Mercedes Benz? And this car with all the miles it has on it and despite the fact that it's traveled to more than one dealer cross country in its life is in way better condition than newer cars I test drove. That gave me a ton of confidence that the materials inside are very durable and this car won't look trashed in 10 years. And it's low maintenance with only needing an oil change every 10k miles. It provided decent insulation from wind noise and bumps in the road. The cons: Not the best fuel economy. I'm not getting a drop better than EPA city estimates of 20 MPG - ouch! But this car was so nice I overlooked that. Not the best sound quality from the speakers but not horrible. Not the sexiest coolest car, but ok. Strange how the windshield wiper arm scrapes against the hood when you need to lift it to change the wiper blade. Also, the keyless entry thing is slow so I always try opening the door and it's still locked which is annoying. Also, the sport mode is a little unrefined. Other than the fuel economy, minor quibbles and I signed up for this knowing the fuel economy (but ignoring it since the car is so nice!)."

Pros: "Solid , great ride , 36 MPG, HIGH QUAILTY"

Cons: "more storage for the driver"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"S60 2016 Premier 2.0 4 with E Drive I will not go on and on but we tested every car out there from 32000 to 45000 and we are a car salespersons nightmare. Test drive after test drive we kept going back to the new 2016 S 60 . We love how solid the whole car is , safe , the best seats out there, tech is nice , great paint job. I am glad somethings never change and Volvo is still a Volvo . Plan on keeping this beauty for a long time so over all this was a real nice value compared to the Caddy ATS . Volvos hold their value . There are not many cars you can drive for 600 miles without back issues , this is one you can . Oh the base sound system is more than one needs , great crisp sound with awesome bass . The E Drive is tops , 36 MPG average and this cars moves out . Take one for a ride you will be hooked ."

Pros: "Beautiful, value, efficient, fast, agile"

Cons: "Ride, rear seat, trunk"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I have owned this car, certified pre-owned, since 8,800 miles (approx.). I've put a little over 5,000 miles on it since, and I can't say much of anything negative about it. Ember Black Pearl metallic paint is a WONDERFUL color. If there is anything I would improve, it would be the dashboard. There is an area around the central air vent that's missing an aluminum ring around it (compare it to the outer air vents), and I wouldn't mind having the dashboard wrapped in stitched leather. (It's soft-touch plastic.) Mercs, Jags, Lexuses and Audis probably have marginally-better attention to the finer details. That being said, short of a few niggles on the interior, there is absolutely NO shortage of comfort. The leather and seats are soft, sumptuous and supportive enough for the average sport driver, though those dedicated to the art would likely prefer a REAR-wheel drive car. The rear seat room is a little tight so I wouldn't recommend it for VERY long hauls. You better not mind frequent trips to the grocery store because of its small trunk. And if you get the Sport Package, be prepared to feel the imperfections in the road. On the flip side, with the sport suspension, it corners every bit like a BMW or a Cadillac. It's a beautiful, stylish and unique car that's a fantastic alternative to the more common German choices. It feels put together like a drum, and projected reliability (and experienced, in my case, so far) is excellent. Fuel economy is terrific (I only fill up about once a month AND it takes Regular gas), and it's a wonderful value if you're buying CPO. For the same price as a mid-range Camry or Accord, you can buy this beautiful, efficient and stylish full-on luxury car, fully-loaded, fast and fun. And its base engine is equal or superior to the competitors' offerings in both power and efficiency. Highly, HIGHLY recommended."

Pros: "Great interior/exterior design, Smooth drive"

Cons: "Bad Navi system, only one USB port!"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"I've had my Volvo since 2012. Loved the 50K miles all included service and unhappy the freebie ran out! Love the car, had very few issues with it during the almost 4 years and dealership was quick to fix anything that came up. Got outstanding service from them here in Texas. Car drives well, and the safety features are outstanding. I've fortunately avoided a few collisions due to the safety features. Love my Volvo and have no complaints at all! Beautiful car inside and out. My only gripe would be the design of the navigation system which I think is especially hard-to-use. The user interface is from optimal and I just stopped using it and use Google maps on my phone instead. Definitely wasn't a worthwhile investment to get the navigation package but I believe it comes bundled with a few other things that are very useful."

"Bought this car CPO used 39k miles, white with black/camel interior, back-up camera and blis. This is the second S60 in our family now. My partner bought his 2 years ago and when I decided on a new car, this was the perfect choice. Most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. Interior with the black/camel is stunning and provides a sporty appearance. What I ultimately love about this car is how it drives. Smooth and sporty with a very peppy engine that will push you back in your seat. Responsive handling zips me through rush hour while the interior comfort and technology has me singing out to my favorite songs. If you have not driven one you must. Don't buy until you have!"
