Pros: "Last Forever, comfortable, best used car!"

Cons: "No cup holders, getting old/rusty."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"We bought our 1993 Volvo Station Wagon, Dory (she is blue, and she "just keeps swimming" ) used about 14 years ago (2002) when she had about 145,000 miles. She is about to reach 250,000 miles. When we purchased her we paid.....drum roll....$3,000. We use her for mostly around town, though lately my husband has been driving her round trip to his work, 20 miles each way. Dory is a very comfortable car for her age, and the car fits both him and myself well - he is 6'5" and I am 5'5" - she has had her issues - we recently put in about $2,500 worth of fixes, which included the drive chain (it rusted through) new brakes, something to do with the steering, and a bunch of other small electrical items, but we are trying to eke out her last years while we have two in college. She is now driving with a much tighter feel in her steering since the fixes, and it is fun to drive her. Even though she is rear wheel drive, she does fine with snow tires in the Winter. I have noticed that parts of her are rusting (I can see rust inside the door where it meets the frame when closed - you can't see it when the door is closed.) While Volvos are known to be very safe, it is getting to the point where newer cars have many more safety features, like Electronic Stability Control, and a passenger air bag. We have bought other used cars, but she is the one who just keeps on going. It was great when our kids were young, and as a car to learn driving in for our kids. She needs attention, just like any other car, but the transmission and engine have been fantastic, and for such an old car in New England, her body is holding up well. This is a great car!"

Pros: "have not seen it for about 6 months"

Cons: "think it could be fixed if someone gets it in time"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 3

"I think this car was in good shape 0ne year ago when I gave it to my granddaughter, I believe it was driven roughly and not cared for. Now she wants to sell it. I just wanted a ballpark figure. I know with the way I took care of it, it would have gone 3 or 5 thousand miles. Always in garage and cared for every 3thousand miles.in Monterey, california."

"I am the original owner, purchased from showroom floor in 1992, she always starts through any weather. Negatives, high test gas and not good in heavy snow unless one knows how to drive in snow, which they do not know here in NYC. Jan She is like an old friend!"

"This car has seen us through much!!! Including 2 front end accidents and another smaller one, at which point I begged the insurance company not to total it!! What an amazing feeling to send our son's off to college in Virginia, have it returned for the next one etc etc. We are now planning on donating the car to charity or someone who needs a very safe vehicle…we are a volvo family (7) its the whole safety thing…maybe now that everyones off on their own I should find a midlife crisis car!!!"

Pros: "Great Engineering"

Cons: "Not much to look at, but so DEPENDABLE"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"My EE hubby thought I had lost it, when I bought "Vixen" in my 30's. My new 940 was boxy, boring, symbolic of either an old hippie or a republican. Fast forward 20 years, and my husband THANKS ME FOR MY 940 DECISION. The car has had some work done, granted, but the cost of ownership has been more than reasonable. Repairs have been higher than let's say a Toy, but if you do the math, she's been on the cheap to own 20 YEARS. "Vixen" is long in the tooth, and it's time for her "transition". I am in tears. I LOVE her boxy boring dependable self. (tear stained pillow) Our car doc this is one of the best models Volvo made. Goodbye old friend."

Pros: "A legendary vehicle that runs forever."

Cons: "Not a chick magnet."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"BUY IT! They still are out there. Anything well maintained under 200K is fine, and if you can chance upon a car around 150K, this is a car that you can easily drive for another 150K and maybe more. These are bland vehicles only if you consider comfort, stability at high speed, great brakes and legendary longevity boring. All parts are easily sourced at local stores or on the net. Most are cheap...ex. new rear rotors(2) and pads 78$ TOTAL! Calipers around 50$ea.Full cat back exhaust 179$....Most of the problems can be traced to relays/electrical...can be tricky to diagnose, but any decent volvo guy usually has it fixed in no time. The net is full of information and fixes for these models..they are LEGENDS! Once fully up to snuff, just drive and forget about problems...My last 740 went 240K with original starter,alternator...never an engine issue, never a tranny problem...Sold that car, and it still goes and goes...Reinvested in a newer(1993) 940 wagon....purchased cheap, with total go through I'm in about 2 grand..I plan on driving this car for at least the next 15 years...no problem. I get around 25-27 mpg on average, even with the wagon."
