"Purchased used in February 2000; plan to drive it forever. Seats five adults, fold down rear seats, backseat center opening to trunk is handy for skis or similar items inside car, fold down child seat in center back. Looks great, rides great, low maintenance. Love the suede seats, love the oxymoronic spoiler on a 4D sedan Volvo, love the car!"

Pros: "Durable as all get out."

Cons: "Weighs 2 tons"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I've owned this car for almost 2 years now, and it is the single most amazing car I've ever driven. These things are tanks. They go FOREVER!! Guy I bought it from had never had the timing system changed. It had 186k miles on it, still running like brand new. If you buy this car for less than 3k from anyone, you're getting a steal!"

Pros: "Handles beautifully; sleeps a 130-lb. wolf and me"

Cons: "Rats like it, too--to chew on! Needs 89-octane."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"My dear Volvo--I've slept in it, had meals in it, stayed warm in it (heated seats), carried Pulitzer Prize winners in it, waited for ferries in it, lived with a big wolf dog in it--I love this car. But now the wiring harness has been munched on by rodents and it will probably be deemed a total loss. Sob! Where will I find another Volvo as good as this one?"

Pros: "Reliability, comfort, sexy sedan."

Cons: "Price of replacement parts."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Actually, all 6 Volvo's I've had were the stuff (yes, even the 1964 122S)!! I bought it used from a guy that maintained it well. I've put 60,000 miles on it, freeway, town, and even off-road a bit. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country on any given day, rain, snow, what ever. It will easily go 300,000 miles and then I'll think about getting an XC90. The only thing that makes me nervous is the lack of service you need to do on the automatic transmission. The parts are pricey at the dealer, but if you're a mechanic shop on-line and save a lot of money."

Pros: "A car car known for safety and quality."

Cons: "Some prefer less unique body styles."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"This review stated that his 1996 was falling apart because after 18 years the dash rattles...or there are other vague issues and rated the car overall as a 2. He blames this on Ford, who apparently sent people out to remove quality Volvo parts after they acquired the company in 1999. How else could it be Ford's problem that his 1996 car is not in perfect condition? The review, especially its scores, should be ignored."

Pros: "5 cyclinder turbo motor. Decent performance."

Cons: "Interior falling apart - plastic crumbling."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 1

"Where to begin. Used to be Volvo's were over-built, hi-quality, Swedish cars with a tendency to last forever. Not so after Ford bought the company. My '96 850 Turbo is literally coming down around my ears. Every piece of the largely plastic interior (including the fake wood) is made out of the cheap hard stuff and is only hardening with age, and crumbling with use. Worst of all, the 850's are NOTORIOUS for dashboards that come "unglued" and begin to shake and rattle loudly once the two plastic retaining clamps at the firewall crack and let go. Think I'm kidding? Go see for yourself on Matt's Volvo blog. Absolutely criminal, but true. The only, ONLY good thing about this car is the drivetrain - apparently Ford could not convince Volvo to get rid of their quirky 5 cyclinder, and with a turbo it still turns out credible performance 20 years later. Just be sure to change out the cam shaft belt at 70K or the motor will self-destruct (its an "interference" type motor where the piston and valves clash when the belt goes)."
