I own this car - My approximate mileage is 206,000
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "Handling, comfort, reliability, 30 mpg hwy"
Cons: "No cup holders, not torqy"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10
"I bought this car at an auction for $1000 dollars and after replacing some really bad tires and getting it aligned I fell in love with the way this thing drives and handles. I have the 1993 850 GLT non turbo in black with a rear spoiler and I've come to see it as a very good looking car, I prefer the sharp boxy front end of the earlier years to the later ones. Power was aweful when I first got this car and I had a major starting issue, sometimes the car would even die on the highway. I was worried about reliability for awhile until I realized that I had a simple bad fuel pump relay (easy and cheap to replace) and a very dirty air intake/throttle body/idle air control valve system. Working on this car myself has made it very affordable and I recommend that anyone considering buying a twenty year old be willing to do so. The 2.4 liter 5 cylinder has a decent amount of power but I wouldn't call it torqy, I'd love to have a turbo version. The last thing I'll say is that the interior is incredible, everything is laid out in a simple to use manner and the seats are oh so comfortable. No real cup holders but the gas gauge indicates how many gallons you have left which is awesome!"

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 220,000
overall rating 8 of 10rating detailsPros: "Engine last forever, hard parts are reasonably $"
Cons: "Fuel economy, flame trap, Auto tranny."
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9
"I've owned this car for two years. Odometer stopped working before I purchased, but I can say it has well over 220,000 miles. FIRST ADVICE: Do not buy the Automatic tranny! They have a bad reputation and will NOT outlast the engine! These engines are known to go well over 300,000 miles. The tranny on my automatic died after only 150,000 miles. I liked the car so much, I purchased one with a manual tranny. I have not had any issues at all with the tranny since then. If you do not work on cars, LEARN! especially if your looking to buy a Volvo. The dealer and the Indie shops will rip you off! I learned everything I know about my Volvo from online forums and youtube. They are not hard to work on and the parts are not that expensive! The more expensive items on this car are a few sensors and relays. Hard parts are reasonable priced. Yes it is a box but it will last. I was planning on handing it down to my son after he gets his license but he says its ugly so I'll be keeping it. His loss, my gain."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 160,000
overall rating 9 of 10rating detailsPros: "fun to drive, reliable, solid, safe, handles well."
Cons: "sub-standard cup holders."
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9
"My parents bought this car (850 Turbo Wagon) for my triplet sisters and I back when we were in high school (~2003), had ~110,000 miles on it. It has been a great reliable car that has lasted. You cannot beat the pick-up of the turbo engine, it just has the kick that makes it fun to drive! It's a tank in the snow with traction control and winter driving mode. We have the rear- facing seat in the trunk that faces backwards, so it seats 7. Those are fun! My sister had it in Milwaukee, WI for 2 years, and it ran great, and lasted through those frigid, Mid- West lakefront winters, AND got to and from Denver. I now have it to drive around Colorado (it does great in the mountains!), and am planning on driving it til it dies. Only problems thus far have been minor electrical issues (a lot of which have resolved on their own), the odometer stopped turning at 148,000 miles, and it leaks oil (I just put some more oil in every so often). Other than that, it's in GREAT condition for a car its age and with its mileage. I love Volvos!"

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 190,000
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "Safe, reliable, comfortable. very low cost at 190k"
Cons: "Can't think of any"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 5
"18 years, 190,000 miles, still feels new. Very comfortable for long distance driving, downright luxurious for commuting. I love the simple interior design, convenience and practicality. Handles well, good in the snow, and of course Volvo safe. What more could you ask for a car? I take care of my cars and keep them a long time. Forty years of driving, this is my third car. Complaints about reliability from people who replace cars every few years tells me they abuse or do not maintain the ones they have. Occasionally things break or wear out. I fix or replace them. Price for repairs probably higher than for some other manufacturers, but at 190k I am so far ahead financially that it is silly to complain. Reluctant to recommend an 18 year old car to anyone unless they know it has been properly maintained. I will keep this until it can no longer be repaired. Then I will buy another Volvo."
