"I replaced my beloved 2001 Lexus RX 300 3 years ago after a scary accident driving in the mountains in Colorado, and chose the Touareg because it felt like the heaviest, safest vehicle I could purchase in the mid size SUV range. (I test drove 14 mid size SUVs.)
After owning and operating the thing for 3 years, I have almost no complaints. It feels safe in even the worst snow conditions and it off roads like a Jeep. It has luxurious features that I cannot live without, like heated seats and heated side mirrors, a backup camera and comfortable leather. It’s surprisingly compact for an SUV but doesn’t compromise cargo space.
My main cons for the vehicle are the overall cost of ownership and the way the back seats fold down.
The car requires premium fuel, and somehow manages to boast a 26 gallon fuel tank, so filling up every 10 days or so can be very costly. Additionally, everything about the car is beefy and quality, so replacing the brake pads, for example, requires replacing a few other parts as well that brings the total to over $1000. I also have to take it to a specialty shop for things like oil changes, since it’s a VW and a complex one at that.
Lastly, and probably my biggest complaint, are some of the weird seat features of the passenger and back seats. Notably, the passenger seat features a fully manual set up, which is an odd contrast to the highly digital adjustments of the driver seat. I also really dislike the way the backseats fold down, which is important because my car doubles as a portable garage to haul my bike, skis and camping gear around. To fold down the seats, you have to first remove the headrests, then lift up the bottom seat, then fold down the back of the seat. To add insult to injury, the middle seatbelt in the back has a locking mechanism that gets stuck, and requires a trip to a shop to unbolt the bottom of the seatbelt hydraulically, pull the seat up, and then rebolt it. After two visits to fix this, I just left the middle back seatbelt unbolted permanently.
Overall, if my biggest complaint is the back seat, I think this car is pretty darn perfect. And safe and fun and functional to boot!"
