Pros: "this car handles very well, very comfortable"

Cons: "it is 12 years old, after all."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"This car, light green, AWD V6,sunroof - had a new engine installed at about 105,000 miles. It has been used in the country (Nevada City, CA) all it's life; a lot of driving on dirt roads. As far as I know there are no mechanical problems with the car.new tires. What's wrong with it: It need a new outside temperature sensor It has a few minor dings and abrasions, nothing serious or requiring body work. Occasionally the check engine light comes on, but it's off now The ABS and brake warning light is on now...I am told by a trustworthy mechanic that it's most likely a loose wire, probably near the rear wheels, brakes work fine. There is some wear and tear on the driver's seat; otherwise the interior is fine, everything works as it should."

Pros: "Drives like a sports car"

Cons: "None"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"My Passat 2.0 Liter diesel gets over 50mpg at 60 mph. It is very crucial that you buy synthetic German oil that meets all the vw specs. this will avoid engine sludge buildup my vw has over 243,000 miles and still looks and runs like new."

Pros: "5 speed manual 28mpg never lower. always runs"

Cons: "192000 turbo giving out. few things broke c review"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 8

"Drove for 5 years. 4cyl 1.8 turbo always gets min 28 mpg "sipper" Always starts and runs great. Think it was the turbo starting to go cause would sputter sometime when gunning it and turbo wouldn't kick in. That started this year. Sunroof some how messed up so its got 3 little pieces of duct tape so it doesn't fly up at fast speeds but never leaked. trunk latch doesn't latch but no one knows it except people I love. Heated seat passenger side doesn't work, but my side does :0) Love that it run all the time so I just got a 2013"

Pros: "acceleration, handling, four-wheel drive, comfort"

Cons: "price of repairs, low splash shield/bottom"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 7

"I bought a 2004 Passat sedan, with four-wheel drive and fuel-injection system, in 2013; it was going to be a car only for short distances/local errands, as I took public transportation otherwise and had another family car for longer trips. I had read that the Passat had some reliability problems, that the mid-2000s were bad years for the model, but it was such a good low-mileage deal that I took a chance. I got a great buy. This car handled incredibly well, with great acceleration on, say, highway entrance ramps, and a tight feel on the road. The interior made sense; the braking was excellent. As another review here stated, it really does have a low shield; mine was really a mess and I hadn't realized. Perhaps that's expected of an older car, but often I felt that low floor on roads. I did have trouble with a brake warning light that I couldn't seem to get fixed, and I did have to replace a secondary air pump; again, that's the sort of thing one would expect, but the prices for any replacement parts are very high. I also could've wished for better gas mileage considering the car needs premium fuel. All that said, I would've driven this car another three years, probably, had it not been totaled. But the good news there is that the airbags deployed and likely saved me big injury, as I was rammed full speed from behind when stopped at a line of cars on an exit ramp, pushing my car into the next. I had only minor injuries, and authorities on the scene kept saying how well the car held up and protected me. So while I've noted problems, I'd say that the bad reviews I had read were WAY off target, in my experience. I liked this car."

"I thought really highly of my Passat wagon 2003//standard shift... until it suddenly wouldn't start one day. For about 8 months I never knew if I'd be stranded or need to go without car for a few days. Brought to VW dealership time and time again... a few tows, a number of "I'll leave it with you"... and it always started at the dealership. Finally a VW expert came through town and diagnosed the electrical problem quickly. I'll never buy a VW again even though I like how it drives, solid, comfortable--everything fine unless undiagnosed electronics leave you stranded in awkward parking lots--and you have to walk home or call for a ride."

Pros: "reliability, performance, economy, design"

Cons: "rear legroom for tall teenage boys"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I purchased my Passat new and have loved it since day 1. It handles like a sports sedan should: corners well, yet smooths out the bumps on the open road. It *feels* solid -- more so than many euro/import and econo cars I have driven, yet it doesn't feel big and bulky like most American sedans do. The design -- inside and out -- is simple, refined and comfortable. Tasteful, but not too flashy. The TDi (turbo diesel injection) engine is a great blend of performance, reliability and economy. This car has held up well, and my only regret is that it's starting to feel a little bit small for my family of 5 as the kids are entering teenage years... but I just can't give it up!"
