I own this car - My approximate mileage is 125
overall rating 1 of 10rating detailsPros: "Pretty"
Cons: "Unreliable, poorly made, known defects"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 1
"This is the worst car I have ever owned! It is falling apart at 125K miles. I have had many expensive repairs such as transmission problems, oil leaks, etc. I spent AT LEAST $15K on repairs during the 12 years I owned this car(I wish I had saved my repair records for this review, but I chucked everything the minute I got rid of the car.) The interior of the car was no better...the glove box latch fell apart in my hands, one of the rear windows wouldn't open (these 2 things were going to cost $700+ to fix so I didn't have it done.) The final straw was that it started making some serious noise from the bottom of the engine. Took it to the mechanic and he had a Technical Advisory from VW that said this was a known problem...the tensioner for the timing belt was problematic (theoretically from using the wrong oil, but I always had the dealership do the repairs, so go figure.) The advisory said "Do Not Repair" because the noise was only present when the car was idling. It was so loud that people looked my way when I was stopped at a light. The mechanic told me he gets more Passats that need expensive repairs than any other car. Do yourself a favor...take a cab."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 140,000
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "lots of options and reliable"
Cons: "not for a family with mulitable car seats"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10
"I bought this car used and it has been very reliable other than a new battery and tires i havent had to do anything to this car. However if u need 3 car seats your going to want somthing a little wider which is the only reason im looking for somthing bigger. I highly recomend this car its realiable and has lots of options"

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 187,000
overall rating 9 of 10rating detailsPros: "Not boring, fully loaded with options, comfortable"
Cons: "High Maintenance, High parts cost, headache"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 7
"When you buy a vw/audi you should know the parts aren't cheap if you choose the dealer, whether its you having to buy the part that day (no choice online takes times) or you need to have them service something no other shop can, its pricey. I cannot complain about anything else minus the stuff that breaks on these cars it is all the same stuff very common problems. Valve cover gaskets, mass air flow sensors, axles, ripped leather seats, vacuum hoses, secondary airpumps, on audi a4/passat 1.8T's the way the oil pan is you have to change the oil pickup tube (take off the oil pan) because the netting in there gets sludged up over time etc. The car is an excellent daily driver, it has plenty of pick up, comfortable (when axles, control arms, tie rods, spring and struts are okay) plus has appeal past a boring accord or camry. They might be more reliable but to me they are boring. The passat is for a person who does not mind tinkering here and there when they have an issue that pops up randomly because it will. Any vw/audi is like that in my opinion from 96+ a4 a6 a8 passat jetta gti golf etc. The car will not be afraid to give you christmas lights on the dash board for the smallest issue and it might not even be what you think. For an automatic sometimes you might feel like your transmission is bad, but its just a bad mass air flow sensor instead. My personal vehicle is in great shape, sounds healthy even at high mileage. You do the maintenance, they run forever. It has leather, heated seats, sunroof, power windows, locks, cruise control and the manual transmission gives the car more flare and life. Already have taken care of some of the common issues with these cars so mines decent."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 193,000
overall rating 8 of 10rating detailsLikely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9
"After 13 years and a 193000 miles, still getting 30 mpg and haven't endured any major maintenance or repair costs. Body still in great shape, no rust . Couldn't be happier with the car's overall performance over the years. A couple of not so great points would be the placement of the cup holders , near the gearshift and the length of time it takes for the car to cool off in the summer and warm in the winter."
