"I have both good and bad things to say about this car. First, I can't say anything bad about the comfort or reliability. It has seen 115,000 miles in seven years and all I've had to do is change the battery and repair the front end (thanks to the previous owner, who declared she could drive a 5spd. Had the car one day). It is also very comfortable, but the leather seats are badly worn.
For the engine, the fourbanger isn't my favorite with only 150 hp and 150 ft/lb torque, but the turbo helps a little.
This is a great first car and a great family car, but I would feel bad recommending it for anything else."
"I bought the car with 50,000 miles and have had 65,000 trouble free miles over the last 5 years. I get 32 mpg hwy with the 1.8L with 5 speed. Much better performance with the 5 speed. Change the oil every 5-6K with full synthetic and you won't have engine problems. Still drives solid and no rattles with 115,000 miles. Now looking for a slightly newer Passat with lower miles."
"I bought my 2000 GLX new. It was difficult at the time to get a standard transmission, but I wanted a fun car to drive. It was and has been. At times I think the Audi would have been sportier and handled better but not for $10K more. I also got it because I fit in it (I'm 6'4"). Repairs can be expensive. It's well worth finding a mechanic that understands VWs. Our closest dealer is 90 minutes away. The interior has had some early wear and I've had to fix two power windows. All in all not bad. I'm getting ready to sell because I'm in need of a truck."
