"I bought this vehicle brand new in Sep. of 1993 with 4 miles on the odometer. The toyota was actually third on my list of small pickups in my price range. I test drove the Chevy S10 what junk. As I was paying cash it took me a long time to save up the money needless to say I was very disappointed. Then I gave the GMC a run it was no fun. As the Ranger was $4000 over my budget and not willing to spend my hard earned cash on junk, I was no longer excited about what I had looked forward to for so long. A few days later I ended up at a Toyota dealership and among their new inventory that just came in that morning was an all stock 2wd black Toyota pick up. Not expecting much I drove it before they even washed it. What a superior vehicle and at a better price too ( paid $7,500 out the door ) I've had this truck for almost 23 yrs which I named Black Thunder. got it when I was a single guy since then started a family raised my girls remembering when all 4 of us fit in the cab and now they're out of the house having children of their own. I've driven all over the western US putting over 250,000 miles on less than half a dozen tune ups, 5 sets of tires, only 3 brake jobs and though he has been considered totaled twice once in a near head on collision with an out of control 4x4 Toyota of the same year in a snowstorm on a steep winding Oregon mountain road. ( not my fault and the guy who hit me owned the body shop at the nearest town 15 miles away. We hit so hard it ripped the whole undercarriage of his lifted truck right off. buckling the roof , damaging some tools in the cab and knocking the stereo out of the dash and that seatbelt held fast. I didn't even get a scratch and he fixed it like new. the second time it was parked and my neighbor while intoxicated smashed his Ford F150 into my grill . Put it back together once again, This truck has handled more than it was ever meant to and though little things have needed to be fixed on occasion due to wear and tear, and under a primered hood is the most reliable vehicle that I've ever had by far. As I don't wear labels The first thing I did when I left the dealership was remove that Toyota sticker on my tailgate. I wasn't being paid to drive a billboard around. But I will tell you what this truck not only drives and handles like the day I bought it and what is truly amazing is that with over a quarter of a million miles driven and still going strong on the original Clutch. I understand that my review doesn't have any technical details on my truck. As being a carpenter I am only a mechanic when I have to be It's not something I particularly enjoy. I want a car to start and go when I want/need it to preferably with a little music too. this truck has been the best most reliable friend I ever had. I would do a Toyota Commercial For Free"

Cons: "Only one cup holder."

"I have a 1989 Longbed (KBB doesn't show that year) If you've ever seen the Top Gear episode of this truck (they start it on fire, sink it in the ocean, explode it, drop it off a skyscraper..and it still starts every time!), then you will understand that nothing will stop this truck or its legendary sr-22 engine. I bought this truck from the 4th owner in Oregon with 189k on it last year for $1600. It had all original parts on it. Never got regular oil changes or maintenance, and looked rough. I was skeptical. I put new tires on it, changes some belts and spark plugs and most importantly the oil...and now at 213k it has never let me down! I use it as my daily driver and it has gone on extensive off-road adventures and cross-country roadtrips without a single hiccup. I can't wait to see it at 400k. I'm hooked on Toyotas after owning this truck!"

Pros: "Reliable, great gas mileage, easy to work on"

Cons: "Spendy no matter how old they are"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"At the time I bought this truck in 2005 (used, from the first owner) the going rate for this age of Toyota pickup was more than double blue book price. I lucked out and got a great deal, owned the truck 10 years, and just sold it for MORE than I bought it for. And I could've sold it for even more, possible triple blue book value. Good luck finding one in decent shape that's anywhere near as cheap as this quoted price- they simply don't lose value!"

"I can't say enough good things about this truck. It's 21 years old and has never let me down! It even has the original clutch!!! I figure I will be buried in this thing. It has its issues now but wow, what a great little truck. It's like a member of the family!"
