"As a 63 year old driver I have owned & driven many, many vehicles during my lifetime, but never, in my life, have I ever owned a vehicle as reliable as my 2004 Tacoma Pacesetter / 4 door /6 cylinder truck. The only repair I have ever needed was to replace the brake system @ 90K miles and let's face it, no brake system is going to last forever. I also replaced all the belts & hoses @ 100K but, to me, that was just common sense. Those are "wearable" items that we all know aren't going to last forever...I plan to drive this vehicle for another 100K miles."

"I have owned this 15 year old pickup for 13 years. Great little vehicle for my errands, delivering meals on wheels, etc . It looks brand new. Only 90,000 miles. Basic engineering flaw is the turning radius. In some parking lots it takes two shots to park in a slot perpendicular to narrow driveway."

Frame Rust only 9 years old

"You want a vehicle loaded with problems such as rotted frames and difficult to trace evap system leaks, you have found your vehicle. Not to mention Toyota has not and will not reconcile the frames they have pawned off to the consumer. I bought this truck thinking they were built better than the competition. Wow I was wrong on so many levels. I have owned 9 vehicles in my life and this was my first and last Toyota. I had to pay over $11,000 to replace 90% of the metal on my frame because Toyota refused to own up to the problem. They continue to build these trucks with a horribly designed frame and poor rustproofing. My 89' Sierra lasted well over 15 years with only some minor body rust (frame had mild surface rust). With this truck barely 9 years old I could stick my finger through almost any part of the frame. Toyota managed to get away with not having a public recall for this generation so they were honor bound to send out notifications to owners of the vehicles to have the frames inspected and an additional 15 yr warranty placed on them from date of manufacture, however, if you go to the forums and consumer affairs you will see that more than a couple slipped through the cracks of Toyota's due diligence. Since I don't have a few million lying around to start a law suit the only thing I can do is pass along the info and keep others from making the same mistake I did. I will never again buy a vehicle from this company. My neon was more reliable and rust proof than this stupid thing."

Pros: "Awesome truck"

Cons: "not for sale"

"I was looking at trucks on a used car lot for the 1st time ever, had driven 4 or 5 Toyota Tacoma's from this specific lot and when I brought the last one back from the test drive I was ready to give up. That's when a rollback pulled in the lot with MY truck, I instantly fell in love and knew I had to have her. The car lot owner was shocked when I said THAT'S HER, HOW MUCH? And as we talked about a price is when I learned the truck had come all the way from Florida and the very city I had left 3 weeks ago. I'm the 2nd owner and have all the service records from the day the man paid cash for the truck in south Ga. Now, this is where my story gets very weird and strange concerning my truck. My favorite colors are black and red, the biggest Ga fan ever, I had just moved back from Florida to north Ga, the 1st owner's kids lived 40 minutes away from my hometown in Ga, where I moved bk too. The interesting/confusing thing is this man and I lived in Fernandina Beach, Fl only a few miles apart, our names are the exact same. Except his name ends with a "Y" and mine ends with "IE" and the very 1st and only day I had ever been at this USED CAR LOT was the day "MY" truck arrived. Coincidence?!!? Maybe... But I bought my truck, cash money like the 1st owner and I never returned to the car lot again. My girl has been 100% from the day I got her and she's still 100% 4 years later. 1999 Toyota Tacoma Pre-runners are the best, and I will never forget that day!!! I've always heard the saying, "NEVER MESS WITH A WOMAN AND HER TRUCK" now, I know why you don't mess with either of them."

Pros: "Very Practible"

Cons: "Just basics were in it but that's all I needed."

"Great truck! Never had a problem except for the final engine valve problem. Cost to fix versus cost of the vehicle outweigh keeping it. Very sad to let it go but I figure over 300,000 miles of ownership is just a good memory. Would buy another in a second but can't afford it right now. Cannot stress how dependable this truck was!"

Pros: "cockroach like dependability"

Cons: "frame corrosion"

"Sure footed, nimble, and utterly reliable. I bought this truck in 05 with 50k on the odometer. I've now got over 230k on it factory clutch and all. I've had this truck airborne off of a steep enough drop that my buddy in a jeep behind me got high centered because he wanted to live. It climbed a hill so steep that the front end fell off of the hill, and even though I richly deserved it, she still didn't roll. I've hauled 4100lbs of wet sand in the box on the factory suspension, and after I upgraded the rear springs, I pulled a pair of jeeps simultaneously, and later a Kubota farm tractor with a front end loader and auto grader on the rear, no problem. The manual transmission is a godsend. Whenever I need to go slower than idle in first gear, or if I need to move a heavy trailer across soft ground, or backing a trailer up a winding driveway that climbs a hill, all I need to do is hook her down into four low, and away I go. I only lock in the hubs if I actually need the traction. Over a decade of running this truck all I've put into her is gas, oil, tires, brakes, plugs and wires. A few months ago the starter relay went out, and that's it, mechanically. The only down side is that the frame rusted through just forward of the driver's side forward leaf spring mount. It rusted from the inside out, as is common with this series of truck. Unfortunately Toyota refused to do anything about it, so I wound up taking a welder to the frame. I had to replace 23" of frame on the inside, and 19" on the outside. But she's straight, strong, and back on the road."
