2007 Toyota Sienna Review

By

The Toyota Sienna is considered one the best minivans on the market today. Although not as big as the Honda Odyssey or Dodge Grand Caravan, the Sienna is still a sizable family hauler with room for up to eight persons. Known for its solid build and a spotless reputation for reliability, the Sienna quietly retains one other noteworthy quality: A strong resale value. A number of attractive features you won't find on most minivans, such as sliding-door windows that roll down and the option of all-wheel drive, serve to further the Sienna's appeal.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you're comparing minivan comfort and convenience, you'll find the Sienna borrows many of the best ideas from each of its competitors and combines them into a strong, well-built platform.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The Sienna can get pricey as you move up the trim range, but the same can be said of the competition. About the only reason not to like this van is if you are not partial to the styling or interior layout.

What's Significant About This Car?

The Sienna receives a big boost in power with the addition of a new, 3.5-liter V6 engine.

Driving the Sienna

Driving Impressions The Sienna's new 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers where it counts, and it performs beautifully in both city and highway driving. The Sienna pulls quickly from a dead stop and power...

is masterfully managed by an electronically controlled five-speed automatic that makes the most of the engine's torque curve before seamlessly shifting to the next gear.

The Sienna's wide stance and long wheelbase make for an extremely smooth ride and further bolster the Sienna's already rock-solid stability. Some drivers may feel the steering effort to be somewhat heavy for a minivan, but the resultant firm and direct steering makes it possible to pull off highly accurate maneuvers not usually attempted in a vehicle of this sort.

Sliding Side-Door Power Windows
Sliding side-door power windows allow passengers to enjoy as much fresh air as they like.

Split Flush-Folding Third-Row Seat
The Sienna's split flush-folding third-row seat allows you to carry both additional passengers and cargo.

2007 Toyota Sienna Details
Interior

A look inside the Sienna clearly shows that Toyota has moved into the upscale van market. Trim levels grow to four: CE, LE, XLE and Limited. Each trim receives a great standard equipment list. The Sienna's seats take full advantage of the van's extra room and have been given wide seat bottoms as well as better back rests. The Sienna's seating configuration can hold up to eight passengers (two in front, three in the center and three in the third row's split-bench seat). Like the Honda Odyssey, the Sienna's rear seat can fold flush into the floor and features a 60/40 split. Cargo space behind the third seat has been improved thanks to the Sienna's longer wheelbase.

Exterior

The Sienna is smartly styled but offers nothing radical in the way of exterior features or design. Last year's overhaul added nearly five inches to the Sienna's wheelbase. Five inches may not seem like a lot, but to an engineer it's a dream come true. With those five extra inches, the Toyota team increased interior volume by over 45 cubic feet and also extended the Sienna's width and height without detracting from its stability. This new, wider footprint is responsible for much-needed extra hip and shoulder room, a noticeable shortcoming on the outgoing model.

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

The Sienna CE includes a V6 engine, five-speed automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes, 14 cup holders, rear defroster, side-impact and side-curtain airbags, dual sliding side doors, power door locks, illuminated remote keyless entry, power liftgate release, AM/FM stereo with CD, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power windows, full wheel covers and a rear wiper.

Optional Equipment

Options vary by trim and include all-wheel drive, power seats, leather interior, heated front seats, cruise control, dual power sliding side doors, stability control, traction control, power-folding third-row seat (Limited), four-wheel disc brakes, power lumbar support, DVD rear-seat entertainment system and alloy wheels. The XLE and Limited trim offer laser-guided cruise control and optional navigation.

Under the Hood

There is only one engine offered with the Sienna: A robust new V6 offering strong off-the-line acceleration, quiet operation and decent fuel economy.

3.5-liter V6
266 horsepower @ 6200 rpm
245 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4700 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/26 (FWD), 18/23 (AWD)

Pros: "space and reliability"

Cons: "Middle seats- not as comfortable as previous model"

"My husband and I decided to trade our second Sienna in when the new model came out in 2003 because of the increased space in the interior. We had three kids and did many road trips with them, so we opted for extra comfort. I am the primary driver and fully intended to get to 10 years of ownership when we purchased the car. I was thrilled when we made it to 10 years with no major issues. This week we put new tires on the vehicle and took a road trip with our youngest child, who recently graduated high school. It was the trip that pushed the odometer over 200,000 miles-another thrill! We have decided to keep the car to use as the kayak carrier, family hauler (we've added a son-in-law), and overall stuff mover. We will be in the market for a new one within the next year to use as my primary vehicle and to use as the family road trip limo! By the way, two extra pieces of information: the new tires we bought were warranted for 65,000 miles (we believe it will happen) and the reason we got rid of the first Sienna was because it was totaled when it was at a complete stop and someone ran into it going 55 mph. The three family members inside were able to walk away from the scene. We definitely recommend the Toyota Sienna!"

Pros: "Reliable, plenty of room, solid!"

Cons: "We've had brake/ rotor issues the last 30k miles"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"We've had this van since 2005; it has served us well! With 239,000 miles on it, and counting, it just keeps on running. There have been some small issues with it, e.g., the cable broke on the power door, and the latch on the driver's side door, but the engine is running strong. It has plenty of power and drives well considering it's a van. We are looking to replace it, but only because we put on a lot of miles and don't want to risk a breakdown when we are out of town or on vacation."

"This is a very comfortable vehicle with plenty of power. We use it for transporting Boy Scouts and other large groups. There is plenty of room for gear and luggage. My only desire would be to have the option for a middle bench seat instead of two buckets."

Pros: "AWD, Adaptive Cruise Control, armrests & Leather"

Cons: "poor quality upper dash surface with many cracks"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"Excellent, Extremely Reliable and Dependable. The AWD and the Laser Adaptive Cruise Control are great features that are no longer available from Toyota together. you can get one or the other but not both on a new Sienna. we have driven 66,000 miles in 9 years without any mechanical problems. the Model we have is the 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE, AWD, LIMITED. the leather is of superior quality. there are wood panel trim but it is plastic. the top of the dash is now cracking in the 9th year from the sun despite using a sunshade most of the time. we have used it everyday. we have made many 2000 to 3000 mile round trips."
