"Bought this car brand new on 2/1/2000, first year the Echo was manufactured. We really liked the 4 door sedan's styling as it appeared online and test drove it within a few days. We fell in love with it. My husband is 6'5" and at the time the Echo was the only economy car in which he could comfortably fit. It offers plenty of headroom and elbow room, seat adjustment goes back far enough to allow for plenty of leg room (not so much for the person who has to sit behind him), and offers TONS of interior and trunk storage. Its capacity to transport, haul and store items has amazed countless passengers over the years.
What it lacks in get-up-and-go it certainly makes up for in every other way including comfort and great gas mileage. These are only trumped by its dependability. It still starts up on the first try, runs like a champ and has never left us stranded (except for once when the anti-theft device button thingy was pushed by mistake).
For over 16 years this car has made our lives easier. My son essentially grew up in the back of the Echo as it transported him to his 2nd day of school, various functions and road trips to So. Cal. It continued to transport him to his college classes after we passed on the torch (the keys) to him.
Alas, it's now time to say good bye to our faithful, dependable and comfortable economy car, and I have to admit that I'm having second thoughts about selling it. Farewell faithful Echo, echo, echo."
"We have put over 120,000 miles on the car with no mechanical issues. It is a compact car without the creature comforts. High rating for being reliable. Great gas mileage and you can fit it into those small parking spots. Great for driving around a city. Less comfy if on a long trip."
"I bought mine new in 2003, and it has averaged 49 mpg (manual) over the last 12 years. The trunk is larger than many midsize cars and the back seat leg room is good. The short length makes parking easy, the windows offer great visibility, and the center console is never blocked by the steering wheel.
With 255k miles, it just had its first age related problem, a worn front wheel bearing.
I wish I could buy a new one."
"I have owned my Toyota Echo since it was new in 2001. This has been my first and only car. I grew up with this car; it has been with me through high school and the entire decade of my 20's. I can honestly say that it has never required any major repairs; I have maintained oil changes every 3,000 miles and have had minor things replaced throughout the years (water pump, brakes, etc) due to normal wear and tear. This car has never let me down, and starts up every time. We have been through a lot together...if only this car could talk! It would have some stories to tell. I have racked up 230k miles on this thing...and counting. I could easily see another 100k miles added to this engine!"
