"We have put over 120,000 miles on the car with no mechanical issues. It is a compact car without the creature comforts. High rating for being reliable. Great gas mileage and you can fit it into those small parking spots. Great for driving around a city. Less comfy if on a long trip."
"I bought mine new in 2003, and it has averaged 49 mpg (manual) over the last 12 years. The trunk is larger than many midsize cars and the back seat leg room is good. The short length makes parking easy, the windows offer great visibility, and the center console is never blocked by the steering wheel.
With 255k miles, it just had its first age related problem, a worn front wheel bearing.
I wish I could buy a new one."
"I have owned my Toyota Echo since it was new in 2001. This has been my first and only car. I grew up with this car; it has been with me through high school and the entire decade of my 20's. I can honestly say that it has never required any major repairs; I have maintained oil changes every 3,000 miles and have had minor things replaced throughout the years (water pump, brakes, etc) due to normal wear and tear. This car has never let me down, and starts up every time. We have been through a lot together...if only this car could talk! It would have some stories to tell. I have racked up 230k miles on this thing...and counting. I could easily see another 100k miles added to this engine!"
Pros: "Excellent mileage. Reliable. Economic to operate."
Cons: "Could be more stable on the highway."

"I compare this car to the economy cars of my youth (VW Bug, Ford Pinto) and there is no comparison. The technology of intervening years has made remarkable progress.
Is more fuel efficient.
Has cleaner emissions.
Has an excellent automatic transmission and power train management.
Has an AM/FM Stereo, with CD player for greater entertainment.
Has Air Conditioning for greater comfort.
Has Airbags for greater safety.
Was as affordable for it's time as my previous economy cars.
And, is SO MUCH MORE RELIABLE!
The maintenance intervals for things like ignition components are ten times better and more.
Fuel injectors instead of a carburetor. Platinum plugs. Solid state timing and ignition. Computer controlled everything.
Just change the oil and fill the tank. It doesn't get any better. All systems absolutely reliable.
It is a shame that this car was not more stable on the highway (our '91 Corolla was better in that department), and a shame that it did not get a better reception in the US. I was not impressed with it's replacement - the Yaris. for one thing, overall gas mileage supposedly went down. Wrong direction!
When I kept this car below 60 mph on the highway for my long commute, it was not comfortable for a tall guy, but it DID consistently get 42 mpg! When the old lady drove it she got 38 mpg in mixed city and high speed interstate traffic (70+ mph).
Still not too shabby."
"Bought my Echo new in 2001. Have done maintenance as book says and now at 120,000 miles. NO issues we LOVE this car and wish we would of bought 2 at the time. Plenty of leg room for 5'10" people in front and back seats, stick shift and is a zippy car. Gas milage great too! No issues at all wish Toyota still made them!"
