"1999 4Runner sr5 I got after it was sitting since 2009 after the differential went bad and was taken off the road. I was interested to see if it would even start as it was sitting outside all those years. The only reason I tried to get in running again because it's a very reliable car. It has 157k on right now and without too much effort it started right up . I won't lie it is a gas guzzler but it won't leave you stranded. My most favourite vechile ever . If you have a chance to get your hands on one of these do it. You will not regret your decision. They are not a fast or well handling vechile but it gets you to point a to b. I can't wait to start driving this as soon as the differentCal is fixed"
Cons: "Less comfortable to drive than a cross-over"

"Best 4Runner generation ever made.
So last week I went to a lot and looked at "upgrading" to a 2013 4Runner (used) at the urging of my wife who wants me to drive something newer. The mechanic there actually told me my 2002 4Runner (2 wheel drive) is the most reliable 4Runner series (3rd Gen) ever made. He's right. I walked away, kept my truck. I've had it almost 13 years now, bought it with 22K from a car rental place. Never had any issue, none, mechanical or otherwise! My second 4Runner (my first was a 1990 4Runner I owned for 8 years and sold at 160K with no issues). The 3rd Gen felt better on the road (not as heavy/truck-like on the highway), had airbags, better handling, somewhat better gas mileage. Better interior design.
No problem driving in snow and ice in Virginia even though its a 2WD version!
Next thing I know, the years go by with regular oil changes and NO repairs. No issues. A lightbulb out here and there, one set of tires, and the brakes just don't want to wear out!
Cons-- almost none really- rides a little less comfy then (the less durable) "crossover" type of SUV. What a GREAT TRUCK. My co-worker has a 1997 with 320K original motor going strong!"
"I bought this car after I had owned a Diesel truck for 2 years. I thought the diesel was a hog at 20 MPG but the 4runner with the lift gets about 14.5-16 MPG on the average. So if you are looking for a little gas sipper, it is not with this car. I love this vehicle tho! this was my favorite body style which is why I bought this year. and the lift and wheels make it super clean looking, always kills the mountains and gets me to high mountain lakes to catch some fish. Kayaks and Canoes are easy to mount on the roof racks. these things can take a beating and they keep running. I love this car. if it wasn't so amazing I would have gotten rid of it solely off the MPG."
"My Grandfather bought this suv right off the lot in 1996 drove it right up into 2008 until he died.it had been sitting for 7 years then I decided to see how it was doing. Its the base 4x4 with the 4 speed automatic. The seat do show the high milage but there still somewhat comfortable. Anyways since it is a toyota , with a little bit of cleaning a a boast she started right up without hesitation.Rusty , but that just give it character! I would recomend this car to anyone, it has never left anyone down in my family I hate to see the day when she goes!"
"easy to work on and very well made my 96 Toyota 4 runner has been in my family for over 10 years and I have done all the repairs on it myself which is very little. I wasn't crazy about Toyotas till my mother and father passed away leaving this 4 runner to me.i have been driving it for about 6 years and I have never owned a vehicle in my life as dependable as this one it has never let me down or left me stranded on the side of the road. Other than regular maintance tires, brakes, etc I have invested less than a hundred dollars in parts in the past 6 years. Not bad for a 19 year old vehicle. I would highly recommend a Toyota 4 runner to any one"
Pros: "Durable, dependable, stylish, fun to drive"
Cons: "Cup holders are flimsy, no rear air vents"

"Can't say enough about Toyota or the 4Runner. I'm the second owner (14+ years) of a 1997 Limited with 305K miles. It has been the most dependable and functional vehicle I've owned. Obviously, the high mileage has resulted in repairs, but only in the past 2 years has anything major been needed. Love this car!"
