"More capable off road than any modern crossover, yet still as refined and comfortable on road as any sedan. 23 mpg average from the 4 cyl automatic. Leather seating an sunroof are nice options. 200,000 miles without a single problme"
"We have had this manual transmission wagon from the factory and have never needed a major repair, despite brutal winter conditions in some years, also quite a few cross country trips.Because of the various conditions in which we drive, and that we had a teen driver when we got it, we especially appreciate the all-wheel drive. Also the roof rack. I'd buy the same car again when this one gives up, and would pay for a nicer interior and would hope to have some of the newer amenities such as Bluetooth interface and navigation.Husband insists on manual transmission, however."
"We bought ours new in 2001 and it's still going strong. When home, it's parked in the garage. Scheduled maintenance and oil changes have been biggest expenses. It is only in the last 2 years I've had to put in a tiny bit more money than normal, but not worth giving it up. I am assure by many I know who also have this model that is will go 250k on one engine, no problem. It handles fabulous, is very safe, and always feels like it's gripping the road. The worst part of the vehicle? They tend to be loud. I am not sure if it's the body structure and lack of sound insulation, but it's not a quiet ride. But it's not horrible either. And if you are someone who takes good care of your vehicles (maintains as recommended) you will have no problems. Perfect if you have kids and pets, or just an active lifestyle (biking, kayaking, trail running, etc.) And a GREAT dog car! LOVE this car. Will be sad when I finally break down and buy a new car -- but have to say -- won't be anytime soon."
"I have always had trucks but due to my dogs hips, I needed a car that he could get in and out of. The Outback has turned out to be an excellent choice. It is a smooth car but rugged to the core. Love it!"
