Pros: "great reliability and AWD performance"

Cons: "As with all cars, fuel efficiency could be better"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"I LOVED this car...215,000 miles all on the original clutch. This car took me everywhere and through things I never thought Id get out of whether it be deep snow, thick mud or rocky trails. Plus enough room for all of my gear, my dog and friends! All that and averaged about 27 mpg (30ish on the highway!)"

"I have owned my subaru outback for about 5 years and early on it seemed like a very good car. The ride and handling was superb. However recently, in the last 3 or 4 thousand miles, many basic mechanical problems have been occuring. Many leaks, exhaust rattles, drive train problems, steering pump problems causing offensive and dangerous gases in the passenger compartment. In winter, there are times when doors will not open without a prybar. This caused by frozen door seals."

Pros: "Ideal for traveling in snow and carrying gear"

Cons: "Mileage"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"Love this car! I'd buy another, newer version if they weren't so expensive even in the pre-owned market. This car has served my needs very well. It's traveled countless times up and down Western mountain ranges. Completely reliable in even heavy snow. The trip that showed off its ultimate capacity was a 1,300 mile voyage to Yellowstone and back in the middle of winter, carrying four Nordic skiers and all of our gear for a week. My only complaints are about fuel efficiency and interior design that makes cleaning in cramped spaces difficult."

Pros: "Drives like a boss"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Drives like a boss in the winter. I bought it at 2K needing a cheap reliable car. It only had one owner prior to me. it's comfortable, full loaded with leather ,sunroof and I never get stuck in the snow. Plus it's a 5 speed and fun to drive. I have to say I'm sold on subie now. Have only bought new tires for it in a year of ownership. not bad subie. not bad!"

Pros: "super fun to drive"

Cons: "not enough cup holders. My only complaint!"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10

"Our 1997 Outback saved my husband's life when he was pushed off the road and the car flipped, we just bought our second one together, but he had two others before. I have never owned such a reliable car, so good in bad weather, big enough to fit a family of five, driving a manual is so much fun. You don't have to be worried about going a little off road cause a Subaru can totally handle it! Many roads around here are dirt and gravel with huge pot holes, and these cars handle it with no problem. I recommend them to everyone I know who is looking for a new car. Sure as heck beats any ford/Chevy/dodge/etc."

Pros: "Great cargo space, comfort, AWD."

Cons: "Pricey maintenance."

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 7

"We bought our subaru a week before the birth of our first child and have loved it, for the most part. It's got us out of the neighbourhood during several blizzards, and ferried us packed to the gills with strollers, bicycles and pairs of skis all around the region. However, there have been some serious maintenance issues beginning when the car was about 8 years old. For the past 3 years the repair bills have been seriously mounting, which is disappointing. It's time to move on."
