"My first subaru had some type of electrical short under the dash and burnt up in the parking lot at 220000 miles and it was going great at that time. Bought another used forester about 1year younger and it is doing great, Has 147,00 presently and I have had no expenses , other than routine maintanace ( tireds , timing belt-routine, and replace of the clutch ( my daughter learned to drive in this.I have been told it will need a new head gasket in the future, but otherwise doing great. I love this vehicle . Very dependable , great in snow and ice, can go nearly every where, I sometimes tow up to 2000 lbs and although going up Only two things I do not like. 1. Wish it got better mileage, and the "check engine light" goes on and off for no reason ( has been checked several times and my first subaru forester had the same problem). Very comfortable , easy to get in and out of the vehicle ( my father who is 92 has no problems getting in and out and I also an no longer young and have bad knees) , With the seats folded down I can sleep in the back when traveling if necessary . It can carry large amounts of stuff ( I moved from New Mexico to Oregon with my trailer and did 5 trips without any problems ) If I put studded tires on in the winter I can literaly go anywhere , in many cases I can go in deep snow, dirt roads or mud or ice ( with care) where larger 4 wheel drive vehicles cannot. It might not be the best for very rough off road use due to not as high clearance and not as much power going up steep rough off road or rough dirt roads as some of the larger 4 wheel drive vehicle but that is not what I purchased it for , For regular driving and use on rough, snowy or icy conditions it is a GREAT vehicle, ( also I have not heard of any recalls on this make and model ) I am waiting for a few more years and hope to buy a slightly used 2014 or newer ( at that time ) subaru forester at that time to replace this one , just because of the better mileage and safety features in the newer vehicles. Other wise I probably would drive this until it dies ( hopefully 200-400 miles or more ( I know some persons who have reache this point. After I bought my firt forester, my father , his lady friend , and my sister all bought foresters and they all love them also. GREAT VEHICLE This brand is so very reliable I will never buy a differnt brand. It is more expensive initially due to the all wheel drive but IT IS WORTH IT."

"Great car for getting around town and moving stuff from one place to another, but...even better when you get it offroad onto the trails with 4x4's like Jeeps and pickups! It actually went everywhere the Jeeps and trucks went without any issue."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 260,000

Cons: "needs to be maintained!"

"I bought this car used with 200k on it. It had already had a new head gasket, CV joints, and radiator put in. I added a clutch and alternator, and at 250k put in a new front seal and valve gasket. It still gets 23-31mpg, and handles awesome in all weather! We go up to Yosemite or Tahoe regularly, and I have horses so we are always in mud and gravel. I use it as a cab in SF, and on the rainiest days it grips solidly while everyone else is sliding down oily hills. It handles solidly, and I will never go back to a FWD car! People who ride in it cannot believe the miles it has- it looks, sounds and handles like a new car."

I own this car - My approximate mileage is 169,000
overall rating 10 of 10rating detailsPros: "Great fuel mileage, easy to repair, fun to drive"
Cons: "No cruise control, replacing frnt cv axles"
Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 10
"I bought this car from someone who had blown the head gasket for a super low price. I bought all the parts and had the head machined, changed the timing belt, pulleys, water pump, and various other parts. I still ended up spending less on getting this car back on the road than I would have buying it from a dealer. I have had this car on the road for over a year, and I'm very impressed. Only a couple of things come to mind as far as flaws: no cruise control (on my model) and the cab is a bit small for my every growing kids. Other than the front axles, this car is VERY EASY to work on. The fuel mileage is remarkable for a vehicle this age. I would buy another Subaru in a heartbeat! (I haven't had the opportunity to test the AWD, but I am so looking forward to the next snowstorm to test her out!!)"
