2014 Scion xD Review

By

KBB Expert Rating: 5.6

The xD is a compact hatchback from Toyota's youth-oriented Scion brand. While younger drivers will be attracted to the xD's funky exterior styling and sub-$17,000 starting price, this small car can appeal to a wide range of buyers thanks to its flexible interior space and good fuel economy. The 5-passenger 2014 Scion xD can also offer peace of mind with its history of reliability, two years of complimentary maintenance and high resale value. That said, the xD's light has dimmed in recent years amid fresher competitors. The Kia Rio 5-door, for instance, continues to innovate, while the xD lags with an aging powertrain and 4-speed automatic transmission. Likewise, the Nissan Versa Note appeals with a lower price and higher fuel economy, and the Fiat 500L offers Euro charm.

You'll Like This Car If...

If you want a small hatchback with youthful exuberance, a solid track record and no-haggle pricing, the Scion xD is worth consideration. Owners can further differentiate their rides thanks to the Scion's commendable list of accessories and add-ons.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The 2014 xD's 33-mpg highway rating is good but hardly the best in this segment. The Nissan Versa Note, for example, earns up to 40 mpg. If you require all-wheel drive for better grip in slippery conditions, turn your attention to a Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

What's New for 2014

Like all other 2014 Scion models, the xD gains an updated audio system with 6.1-inch touch screen and HD Radio receiver. Also arriving for this model year are two fresh 2-tone exterior paint color options.

Driving the xD
Driving Impressions

The latest Scion xD retains the same powerplant it's been using since the car's introduction for 2008. Producing 128 horsepower, the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder is adequate to move the front-wheel-drive hatchback...

... around town without complaint. Like other economy cars, the motor strains when tackling steep hills or overtaking slower traffic. Those who want to wring the most out of the xD – and save a few dollars – should select the 5-speed manual transmission. Most buyers, however, will choose the optional automatic transmission. This setup can still do the job with its four gears but is looking aged as the xD's competitors usher in smoother and more efficient 6-speed automatics or continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). The Scion xD is capable of handling curves and dips with ease, though rough road surfaces can become uncomfortable in this compact hatchback. Unfortunately the steering wheel does not telescope, making it harder to find the perfect driving position.

SCION DISPLAY AUDIO SYSTEM
This new unit injects the 2014 xD with fresh audio and visual appeal. The system features a 6.1-inch touch-screen display that bundles the standard AM/FM/CD receiver with an HD Radio to receive free, digital broadcasts as well as Bluetooth streaming audio, phone connectivity and USB port.

CONVENIENT STORAGE
Despite its small exterior dimensions, the xD features a profusion of storage cubbies, boxes, trays and hidden compartments for your mobile life.

2014 Scion xD Details
Interior

You won't confuse the 2014 Scion xD's interior with one from Toyota's luxury brand, Lexus. Then again, if you wanted luxury, you wouldn't be looking at a Scion. Where the xD excels is packing a tidy amount of space into a flexible cabin. The hatchback's tall ceiling nullifies headroom concerns, and its 3-passenger rear seat serves up considerable legroom. In addition to folding to create more cargo space, the rear seat reclines for passenger comfort. The new touch-screen display notwithstanding, the xD's dash remains a bit drab. The large controls are easy to use, and plenty of nooks are ready to swallow phones and other accessories.

Exterior

The 2014 Scion xD may be small and not nearly as fresh as it once was, but it still packs some visual attitude. As the little brother to the Scion xB, the xD is appropriately boxy with a squat stance. Its hood is short and its beltline – where the metal sides meet the windows – is rather high. A rear hatch door opens upward for easy loading of cargo. In addition to several features like a rear spoiler and carbon-fiber applique on the B-pillar, buyers have a choice of two 2-tone paint schemes on the 2014 xD that contrast the roof and body colors

Notable Equipment
Standard Equipment

Every 2014 Scion xD comes respectably equipped with power windows/door locks, air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry and the new 6.1-inch touchscreen Display Audio Unit with AM/FM/CD/HD Radio and aux/USB inputs. The xD also comes with two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance such as oil changes, and two years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Optional Equipment

Scion has long been known for offering buyers an array of features and accessories to personalize their car, and that continues with the 2014 xD. Among the offerings are a 4-speed automatic transmission that most buyers will opt for, 16- or 18-inch alloy wheels, and Scion's BeSpoke Audio unit with navigation. The xD can also be equipped with Toyota Racing Development (TRD) hardware such as a sport muffler, rear sway bar, performance shocks and lowering springs.

Under the Hood

Powering the 2014 Scion xD is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 128 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. The Scion's singular engine choice can be matched to a 5-speed manual or an antiquated 4-speed automatic transmission.

1.8-liter inline-4
128 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm
125 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/33 mpg

"I fell in love with the look of my Nautical Blue 2008 Scion xD the moment I saw it and it has turned out to have been the best car! I had to put in an alternator when it was 6 or 7 years old. I just put in at 150,000 miles, 4spark plugs and one coil. Other than these things, it just been regular maintenance and was dependable, problem free driving. I just bought the 2016 Scion iM and it is gorgeous, Pearl white, and it feels like a bigger car in comparison, and all the included technology you would think I would like. Back up camera, voice recognition etc. but I like the Scion xD better because it is simpler. Turn the knob to go back to a song I just scanned by. I have to study how to do that with the new one. Turn the A/C on or off up or down, this new one I still have to figure out. I have it on automatic so it's probably going to be fine and I just need to get through the learning curve. But I don't want to have to have a learning curve though. The xD seems to have less blind spots than the IM. The xD seems easier to maneuver for me. It might be my age, but I prefer my xD to the gorgeous new one. More maneuverable, less blind spots, less technology to figure out."

Pros: "Tons of cargo, Easy to drive"

Cons: "Wiper speed, auto-locks/wont lock"

"This car is great, especially if you're short. I'm just about 5' and I don't have any blind spots in this vehicle. However, taller people may not enjoy it. There is a TON of cargo room, regardless of the kbb info page. My vehicle carries larger and more volume than any of my friends vehicles except the trucks. the seats go down super easily, the seat belts don't get in the way, and it's very easy to adjust back into place. My only complaints about this vehicle are small annoyances you don't notice until day to day life.. Such as the windshield wipers don't have an adjustable setting. The settings are all at odd speeds, too fast or too slow, and you can't change it at all. Also, the back wiper is way too fast. I cannot imagine ever needing it to go that much. So, I end up manually clicking them both or dealing with annoying wipers. Also, you cannot lock the doors with a back-up key faub. If the keys are in, you have to lock from the doors. So no warming it up with one key and getting in later with another. Also, the car auto locks after a few seconds if you turn it off. So, if you're loading things into your car, you need to either leave the hatch open the entire time or carry the key. Kind of defeats the entire purpose of the last function (not allowing you to lock keys in vehicle). Overall, great car. Just wish it was a bit more convenient for day to day."

Pros: "great fuel mileage, cheap to own, cargo,"

Cons: "No factory center armrest, lack of power,"

Likely to recommend this car? (1-10): 9

"I've owned this car 4 years. Regular maintenance, oil changes, air filter, battery only because the car is bagged (air ride) and the dual compressors would've overworked the alternator, are the only things I've done to this car. It's my daily, even during the winter. I wish it had more power, but when I'm getting 38-44 mpg on the highway I can't complain! IDK where they came up with 32 mpg highway! Even stock I was getting 35-37 mpg highway."

Cons: "Can't fit 3 car seats in it."

"Bought brand new in 2008. This has been a great car. Drove this car on a long road trip, currently drive in town and highway and it drives great. Able to fit two car seats in the back and I can still fit in the middle (of the car seats)...just wouldn't want to do that for a long road trip."
